Chapter Eight

"Sometimes you're not really friends with someone unless you've gotten into a good fight with them, like Batman and Superman."

-Mark Valley

During the flight I tried to talk to Hayden but she was still ignoring me. In my opinion she was acting like a child, in all fairness it was her fault that I was late. If anyone should be angry it should be me. Instead of trying to push things with Hayden I decided to try and get to know the team.

I learned that Francesca was married to a fireman named Charlie and that they have twin girls, Ella and Chloe. I learned that Mark, at only 30, is the youngest unit chief in BAU history and that Jason didn't learn how to ride a bike until he was thirteen.

"Do you know how dangerous those things are?" He said trying to defend himself, "every year almost 19,000 people are injured in cycling accidents! That's a terrifying statistic for a young kid to know!"

"You're too smart for your own good, you know that Jason?" I mocked, barely able to contain my laughter.

They also told me about some of their more memorable cases. The one that they all seemed to agree was the funniest was when Mark had to go undercover as a drag queen. Apparently the suspect was working in a bar where a well known drag act was performing and Mark had to go undercover as one of the backup singers. Jason promised he'd show me pictures he had that Mark didn't know he took.

When we landed Mark split us into groups, he and I would go to the police station while Jason went to the hospital with Hayden to speak with the latest victim, Lily Masters. Francesca was going to speak with the local news outlets to try and keep the press releases to a minimum. The last thing we needed was a repeat of Denver and besides, we owed it to the victims to keep their privacy a priority.

I suspected Mark had an ulterior motive, I mean why would he pick me, a trainee agent, to meet the local authorities with him? He confirmed my suspicions when he let me drive to the station. From what I've been told, Mark never lets anyone drive, ever.

I couldn't take the silence anymore. "If you want to say something Mark, say it. Don't keep staring at me like I'm some sort of genetic freak."

He cleared his throat and I knew, without taking my eyes off the road, that he'd realised he'd been caught. "It's really nothing," he said .

"It's obviously not nothing Mark," I said, getting agitated. "So stop lying to me or so help me god I will stop this car!" I knew I shouldn't have shouted at him, he is my boss after all, but I was overtired and stressed about what was going on in my private life.

"Listen Aurora," he said calmly, "I'm the unit chief which means I have to look after the entire team. So when someone comes to me and says they're concerned about you, I have to take it seriously."

"I know you're worried about me Mark but you and the rest of the team need to realise that I'm a big girl and I can look after myself."

"You have to admit that you've been a little off," he said trying to reason with me. "I mean, no offense, but look at you. You have bags under your eyes, you don't look like you slept at all. There's only so much that I can ignore."

I sighed before answering him, picking my words carefully. "Mark, I promise there is nothing going on with me that you need to be worried about."

He nodded but from the look he gave me, and from the way he watched me when he thought I didn't know, I could tell that this was far from over.

I was sitting on the floor of the conference room when the others got back. After Mark and I had met the police chief, a tall Hispanic woman with long black hair and chocolate brown eyes, he went to speak with her further about how we would be running the investigation.
