Chapter Ten
"Betrayal is the only truth that sticks."
-Arthur Miller
***
I've always hated hospitals; even as a child the cold, sterile smell would send shivers down my spine. I used to tell people that one of my older cousins made me watch a horror film set in one when I was ten. Truthfully, the reason was much more sinister.
I'd had to watch my mother die in one.
Well I hadn't actually seen her die, more like heard it. As I'd said before, I couldn't remember all the details of my parents murder. But I do remember some of what had happened after. My mother hadn't died straight away; she was taken to the hospital after a neighbour called an ambulance. Apparently they'd heard me screaming and come to investigate. When they saw what had happened they called 911. She was put in the ICU so I couldn't go and see her, but I could hear her screaming from down the hall. She died in pain, screaming my name.
That was why, whenever I set foot in a hospital, my palms would get sweaty and my heart would beat so hard, I thought it would burst out of my chest.
It wasn't hard to find Molly's room. All we had to do was follow to sea of uniformed cops. She was in a private room at the back of the hospital, away from prying eyes. A media circus had gathered outside the hospital, desperate to get a picture of Molly.
There were two female police officers standing guard outside her room. We'd decided it was better to have female police officers after she freaked out and tried to attack one of the male officers. After the trauma she'd suffered the last thing we wanted was for her to be upset and not co-operate. A middle aged man was sitting in one of the armchairs across from the door. He had thin, grey hair and a pair of thick, horn-rimmed glasses rested on his nose. He was holding a sketch book and carried himself like he was the most important person in the room.
I approached one of the officers and introduced myself and Hayden, both of us showing her out ID's. "Thanks for coming so quickly," she greeted, shaking both of our hands. "We called in the sketch artist when we found out you were on your way." She gestured towards the man in the armchair and he introduced himself as detective Robertson.
I gave him a small nod and turned my attention back to the police officer. "We're going to go in now," I informed her, and she stepped aside to let us through.
When we walked in, the first thing I noticed was Molly. She was curled up in the foetal position with her back to the wall and her arms wrapped around her knees. She flinched when the door closed behind us and rolled over to face us. I smiled warmly at her to let her know I meant her no harm.
"Molly, my name is Aurora and this is my colleague Hayden," I said softly, "we're here to ask you a few questions about the attack. Okay?"
She sat up in the bed revealing black and purple bruises along her collarbones and wrists. She nodded her head and started chewing on her thumbnail. I sat down on one of the wooden chairs beside her bed and took out a pen and paper. I handed them to Hayden so she could take Molly's statement. We had agreed on our way up that I would speak to her since she and I were roughly the same age.
"I'm going to start with something small, just to get us started," I assured her. Again she just nodded in understanding. "What were you doing before the attack?"
