Both of them are very close friends. They both work at the CBI office in Delhi and live in the same apartment. They are among the best officers there. They often solve cases together or help each other in small ways.
I'm not forcing you to see them as characters. You can visualise the ones you like while reading this story. The characters should also be able to exist without clashing.
