Karthik walked into the cabin. At that moment, a call came to his phone, and he answered it.
"Hello..." came a voice from the other side.
"Hey... Ram! Why are you acting so high and mighty?" Karthik asked in a playful tone.
"Nothing like that... What's up? Have you eaten?" Ram asked gently.
"Ah... Any thing important...?"
"Nothing... Are you coming over here?"
"No... I have a few things to take care of here... I'll come once everything's done..." Karthik replied, his voice tinged with sadness.
"Alright then... I just called randomly... You're okay, right?"
"Mmm..." Karthik felt his words slipping away. His mind was occupied with things Aditi had said.
Ram, on the other side, felt flashes of memories of moments that had shaken his conscience. Yet, despite being on opposing sides, he couldn’t bring himself to resent Karthik. Every night in Delhi had been filled with laughter and joy alongside Karthik. Even back home, he received the same respect, love, and warmth as Karthik. Karthik was more than a friend; he was like a brother. He was the one who celebrated Ram's joys and became a comfort during his sorrows. Suddenly, he snapped back to reality as someone grabbed the phone from his hand.
"Hello... Karthik anna... it’s me, Anusree..." said Anusree, who had taken the phone.
"Hey, Anu! How are you? All good?"
"Well... everything was good until now... but now..."
Karthik sensed a hint of sadness in her voice.
"What happened? You’re okay, right?" Karthik asked with concern.
"Anna..., why did you send this nuisance here? You should have come with him if you were sending him! I have no one to support me here now... This gorilla here is constantly bullying me... and I’m just stuck here, helpless... poor me..." Anusree pretended to wipe away imaginary tears while making weird expressions at Ram, who stood there with folded arms, looking at her with a blank expression.
"I have a lot of work here; that’s why I couldn’t come... Sorry... Next time, I'll come too, and we’ll gang up and give him a hard time, okay?"
"Mmm... okay... But don’t cheat me... Last time, you promised to take me out, remember?"
"I’ll fulfill that too. Let me get leave, then. I’ll hang up now... I have some work to finish up. I’ll call later; tell Ram," Karthik said and ended the call. After putting down the phone, Anusree winked at Ram, who was still standing there with folded arms, giving her a sharp look.
"Done? Planning ways to trouble me, huh?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Hehe..." she giggled.
"How cute... Still acting like a little kid, even when it's time to get married..."
"I’m not old enough to marry! You get married first, oh wise big brother..." she said with a mocking smile.
"Oh, you..." As he moved towards her, realizing this wasn’t the place to stay, she dashed away, escaping with a laugh.
"This girl..." He giggled.
***********
"Appu..." That gentle call made him turn around.
"What’s wrong, dear? You seem upset.""Ma... I have a question..." he said softly.
"What question?"
"If someone we love the most... if we find out one day that they are a criminal, should we hand them over to the law? Or should we save them because, in our eyes, they’ve never done anything wrong until now?" Ram spoke thoughtfully, as if deeply contemplating.
"No matter how close they are to us, if they have done something wrong, shouldn’t they be handed over to the law and punished? But remember this, my dear… it’s often circumstances that lead a person astray. In such cases, you need to understand their past, what event or situation led them to commit the wrong. Only then can you decide if you can help them in some small way.
No one in this world is completely without flaws. But a mistake becomes a crime only when it harms others or causes destruction. If there’s no straightforward path to do good for someone or to uphold justice, taking the wrong path is sometimes inevitable. However, those who commit wrong will face consequences. If the law cannot do it, there’s always a higher power, a divine presence watching over everything. Justice will eventually be served.
First, try to understand what led the person you’re talking about into committing such a mistake. Then decide what you need to do."
She gently caressed his head as she spoke."Mmm..." Ram murmured in agreement.
After hearing this,he sleeped peacefully clutching his mother’s sari.
