Chase's POV
After getting my stitches from Marshall, I felt a mix of relief and concern. The sting in my side was nothing compared to the dread that loomed over us. I headed into the control room, where Ryder awaited us for an emergency meeting about the situation at the shop. The air was thick with unease as we gathered in the room.
As Ryder began outlining the incident, detailing how the kidnappers had nearly taken Skye, my heart raced. Each word felt like a reminder of how close we had come to losing her. I glanced at her; she was trying to maintain her composure, but I could see the worry in her eyes. I knew she was just as shaken as I was.
Just then, Skye spoke up, her voice cutting through the tension. "Ryder, I can go undercover. If they are going to come for me again as they mentioned."
I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. "Skye, no! You can't—" I started, but she interrupted me, her determination shining through.
"Chase, listen! This could be our chance to catch them. We can't let them think they've won."
Ryder looked thoughtfully at Skye and then at me, gauging our reactions. I could feel the weight of the decision hanging in the air. Ryder then turned to me, his tone serious. "Chase, as second in command, I need you to make this call. Do you think we can trust Skye to go undercover?"
I swallowed hard, my mind racing. I wanted to keep Skye safe, but I also understood how crucial this operation could be. The thought of her out there, alone and vulnerable, made my heart race in a way that felt all too dangerous.
"I need an hour to think about this," I replied, my voice steadier than I felt.
Ryder nodded, the gravity of the situation settling over us like a heavy fog. "Take your time, Chase. This is a big decision, and we need to weigh the risks."
As I looked around at my team, each pup's face reflected a mix of hope and fear. I felt the stakes rise higher with each passing second. If I made the wrong choice, it could cost us everything—especially Skye.
I took a deep breath, trying to clear my mind. This was more than just an operation; it was about protecting those I cared for.
The tension in the room felt palpable, like a coiled spring ready to snap. I knew I had to make the right choice. The fate of the missing pups and Skye's safety rested on my shoulders.
Chase's POV
As I paced the control room, my mind raced with the implications of Skye's suggestion. The urgency of our situation hung heavy in the air, and the stakes were higher than ever. Skye stood beside me, her eyes shimmering with determination. I couldn't shake the worry gnawing at my insides.
"Skye, this undercover work is dangerous," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "We don't know what those kidnappers are capable of. You could get hurt. I can't risk that."
Her expression softened, but she stood her ground. "Chase, I know it's risky. But think about it—if I go undercover, I can gather intel that we wouldn't get otherwise. I want to help, and I can handle myself."
"Handle yourself? Skye, this isn't a game!" I felt my voice rising, the tension between us crackling. "What if they recognize you? What if they decide to take you again? I won't lose you, not like this."
She stepped closer, her gaze unwavering. "You won't lose me. I promise I'll be careful. I'll use my training, and I'll stay in contact with you the whole time. I can do this."
I looked deep into her eyes, searching for any hint of doubt. Instead, I found only resolve. I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the responsibility pressing down on me. "I can't bear the thought of something happening to you. You mean too much to me, Skye."
