Grace inhaled and exhaled before greeting Jason, she knew that he would question her reasons for coming and at the moment, and she wasn't confident enough to give him any response yet.

“Hope you are good?” Jason asked her, ignoring the fact that she was in his car at nine pm without a cause.

“Yes sir,” Grace nodded, and the car was once again silent as the driver pulled out of the parking lot. But the silence made Grace uncomfortable, “What is he thinking? Why hasn't he asked?”

“How was the event, sir?” She asked, hoping to keep the conversation alive, but Jason seemed uninterested. He noticed her dress, different from the usual suit that she wore whenever she was around him.

He could barely wrap his head around the change in fashion style, could she have been on a date and had just returned? Was she stranded and had pleaded with my driver to pick her up?

“Grace,” He called her name rather than respond to her greetings.

Grace gulped down her saliva, her heart skipped a beat as she waited for the question that. she was dreading.

“Sir?” She replied.

“Why did you ask Jason to give Jennifer Thomson the role without me asking you to do so?”

The subordinate was left dumbfounded, it wasn't what she had expected to hear and for some reason, it was far worse. Usually, Grace stayed out of Jason's matters and only acted when he asked her to.

So far, she had kept the job as a subordinate longer than all the others who worked for Jason because of this submissive nature. But now that she thought of it, giving Harry that instruction was something she wanted or rather has always wanted and now she was short of words.

“I … thought sir … that you…

“Cooking up a lie huh?” Jason interjected and the atmosphere became tense, even the driver could feel it.

“No sir,” Grace replied briskly while avoiding looking back at Jason because who knows? His facial expression might cause her to pass out.

“Then what?”

Jason wasn't upset; it was included in his letter to Harry when he had asked him to invite Jennifer over to the party. But he got to know that Grace already spoke to Harry first because It was included in Harry's response to the message.

“I'm sorry sir, I should have waited for your instructions first before doing that,” Grace apologized knowing that there was no possible lie she could tell to escape this situation.

“That's not the question I asked you, Grace, is it?” Jason's tone raised the tension and now Grace knew that she had gotten herself in big trouble.

This was not how she planned for her night to go, not after dressing up too nicely, trying to make Jason see her differently, now that was ruined because of a single mistake.

“I thought you were going to change your mind because… well you are no longer married to her, so I…

“So you make the choices now?” Jason cut her off again. This was something he hated so much and had caused him to fire three assistants before Grace, unless he gave the instruction, no one ought to decide.

“You know Grace,” He continued with a sigh,

“I was planning to do the same thing, but what if I wasn't, what if I had other plans?”

“I'm very sorry sir,” Grace apologized again. At least he brought down his voice, giving her a glimpse of hope that she would still keep this job.

“I don't just want an apology, this should be the last time that you do something like this without my permission, I hope that is clear?”

“Yes sir.” Grace nodded in agreement and heaved a sigh of relief.

“The party went great by the way, thank you for asking,” Jason added and this was minutes after Grace had asked the question.

The driver was struggling to keep his laugh to himself because the scene was quite hilarious in the end.

They both stayed silent for the rest of the drive and once they got to Jason's house, he asked his driver,

“Are you going to drop her at home too?”

“Oh, no sir,” Grace answered before the driver could,

“I uhm… came to discuss something important with you, that's why I came along with him.”

“At past nine pm?” Jason raised a brow, wondering why she didn't talk about it all the while that they were in the car.

“Maybe she got too uncomfortable after I reprimanded her.”

“Uhm… not exactly sir, It was urgent, and I was hoping to see you in person, but I guess it could wait since it's already too late, I'll just go home and meet you tomorrow,” Grace muttered, and deep down she was disappointed with how things turned out, but she hoped for another attempt.

“Very well then,” Jason said as he proceeded to step out of the car.

“Goodnight Grace.”

“Goodnight sir.”
