1995.

"__ R __ __ E D."

The letters b, c, l, and i had already been marked out. When Leslie would write a letter below the hangman, Erik would either write it in the blank space or write an x through it and draw a body part on the hangman.

Leslie was frustrated. Every objection she called for false information was overruled and not listened to.

Her nostrils flared as she scribbled down the last letters.

"E N R A G E D."

Roses eyes flicked over the piece of paper.

"Sir will you please tell Mrs. Abransom to stop playing hangman with her clients?" The prosecutor said, annoyingly eyeing them as she talked with an aggravated tone.

The Judge looked at Leslie, a pointed and warning look. She maintained eye contact as she balled up the piece of paper, and angrily tossed it in the floor. Rose stifled a laugh by covering her mouth with her hand.

Erik looked at her, the corners of his mouth forced downwards as he held back his smile. She bit back her smile.

Eileen took the stand next.

"Please state your name for the record."

"Eileen Bishop. Eileen; E-I-L-E-E-N. Bishop; B-I-S-H-O-P."

"How old are you Eileen?"

"I'm 30 years old."

"Do you know Rosealine Bishop?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"She's my baby sister." Eileen's brown eyes flickered over to Rose. She gave her a small smile in acknowledgment. Her brown hair was perfectly curled, her lips were perfectly pink, and she wore a Chanel tweed matching set of a sweater and a skirt. It was light pink.

She wore baby pink in support of her sister. Her mother wore baby blue in the audience.

"Do you know the Menendez brothers?"

"Yes I do."

"How do you know them?"

"Erik is dating my sister and Lyle would come around our house whenever Erik would."

"Are you close to them?"

"Yes I am."

"Would you say you were closer to Lyle than Erik?"

"I mean, I was pretty close with both of them but yes Lyle and I were closer."

"How were you two closer?"

"We are both around the same age. We just had more common."

"Did you ever have a romantic relationship with Lyle Menendez?"

"No. He was strictly my friend." Eileen said firmly, adjusting in her seat. Rose played with her fingers, snapping and popping them as Rose talked. A nervous tick.

"Just your friend?"

"Yes ma'am. Just a friend."

"Craig Cignoralli mentioned he thought you two were a couple? Why would he say that?"

Eileen sighed. "Because Lyle and I just hung out a lot. Lyle has a girlfriend." Eileen sounded irritated. As her sister, Rose had heard that tone too many times.

It's the same tone she'd use when she had to pick up Rose from school.

"Get in, bitch." She'd grumble, pissed off that Rose couldn't drive yet. Rose missed her banging on her door for a shirt she borrowed.

"And why would he say that?" The prosecutor pressed on.

"I don't know. I don't live in Craig's mind." Eileen snapped at the prosecutor, flipping her hair over her shoulder in an annoyed manner.

"Did you two ever have romantic moments together?"

"No because I don't like men I'm a lesbian." Some of the audience gasped. Rose let out a snort. Erik's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"Is she actually?" He whispered in Roses ear, the tips of his glasses brushing against Roses face.

"Yes." She said, smiling widely.

"Great questioning." Eileen said sarcastically with a scoff.

The prosecutor didn't expect her response. Eileen wasn't out yet. But Rose knew.

Rose found out when she walked into Eileen's room during a party one time and saw her making out with a girl on the bed.

It was a hard explanation for Eileen. But Rose swore not to tell anyone else. And she never did.

1989.

"Erik is a stupid fucking idiot—that's why he told fucking Dr. Oziel." Lyle said angrily.

Roses hands were on her head as she walked back and forth.

"I just needed to tell somebody." Erik sobbed on the couch as Rose paced. She stopped pacing when she heard Erik's voice breaking.

She frowned, looking at him on the couch. He looked terrified.

"That's why you tell me or Rose! Not some random fucking doctor!" Lyle. yelled again.

"Stop fucking yelling!" Rose screamed, turning to face Lyle. He exhaled, turning away from her.

Rose looked down at Erik.

"I'm not mad at you, honey." She said in a frenzy, her heart beating like a drum against her chest.

"I'm gonna go to jail. We're gonna go to fucking prison. Fuck me," Lyle sighed angrily.

Rose glanced at him. Angry almost always recently. She didn't like that.
