The next morning, Athena skillfully avoided her father and headed out to the mailbox.
Her father expected her to be going to the nearest university for school after completing community college. But Athena had a plan. She always had a plan, especially when it came to growing the ranch she loved. Her father expected her to be going to the nearest university and going to school for business. But that was plan C.
Plan C was going to the expected university and between getting her BA in business, she would also take extra classes geared toward helping her grow and take care of the ranch.
Plan B was going to an out of state university and doing the same as Plan C.
But Plan A, Plan A was her preferred plan.
She reached the mailbox and opened it, pulling the letters that were sitting in it out. She shuffled through them quickly, pausing when she saw the expected letter she had been anxiously waiting for. Shoving the other letters back into the mailbox, she flipped the letter over and ripped it open. She pulled the letter out, her eyes quickly ran over the letter, pausing on the words 'Congratulation on your acceptance into the FBI National Academy.'
Plan A was her preferred plan, no matter how angry her father would be.
She reread the letter three times before she set her shoulders and marched determinedly back to the house. She entered the house and headed to the dining room where Lee, Jamie and her father were sitting eating breakfast. Lee caught her eye and silently shook his head at her, warning her that their father was still in a mood. John looked up at her, his face made of stone as he opened his mouth to most likely berate her for avoiding him when Kayce walked in and slouched into his normal seat.
The whole time he moved, he avoided looking at his twin who frowned at him but focused back on her father. "Sit down, Athena Jade." John ordered.
"We need to talk." She told him instead of following his order.
Jamie leaned back in his chair, gleefully preparing to watch the show as he had heard that John was mad at the 'babies' of the family. Lee sighed, "'Thena, not now-"
Athena ignored Lee's warnings and moved toward her father, placing the letter down in front of him. He looked down at the letter, his jaw clenching before he said, "What the hell is this?"
"I'm going into the FBI academy. I got in and classes start in two weeks." Lee, Jamie and Kayce's eyes widened at her words. Lee looking over to John who stood up and narrowed his eyes at his daughter.
"No, you're going to Montana State University, not to the local academy." John stated assuredly.
"I'm going to the FBI academy in Quantico, Virginia. While training to be an agent, I am going to take classes to get my BA in business. Having someone who knows federal law and who is working for the federal government will help protect the ranch-"
John scoffed and cut her off. "Virginia? You are not going to Virginia and your sure as hell not going to the FBI academy. We agreed that you would go to Montana State for your BA-"
"That was plan C. Working for the federal government is better for the ranch-"
"There is no plan C! There is only one plan, and that is you going to university in state! You are not responsible for determining what is best for the ranch!"
"I'm a Dutton, aren't I? My responsibility is to this ranch!"
"Responsibility of this ranch is to your older brother! I've told you this repeatedly Athena!"
