Cameron remined, mouth agape, gasping for air in the back of the car for the remainder of the ride.
"Cam, are you ok?" I searched his face for remnants of an answer. "Cameron?" I asked again, using his full name for the first time in years. I looked back up at his face, still sat in his lap. He looked like he was in shock. Panting and not saying anything. "Cameron, cut that out!"
We pulled into the parking lot to the lake, Ferris and Sloane grabbing Cameron out of the car and onto the small stone wall. They lay him down, and I sat his head, Sloane at his feet and Ferris on a bench next to us. I place my hands on either side of his now pale face, looking into his deep blue eyes and shaking his face, looking for a reaction. I smiled down at him shaking my head, genuine concern filling my features. I stroke his cheek, poke his face, nothing, not even a smile. I place a kiss to his cheeks, then his forehead, showing him that I was still there.
"Cameron? Cam?" I called once again, running my fingers through his hair. "Can you hear me? Cameron? Blink if you understand me." His face remains emotionless, and his eyes remain unmoving.
"Ferris." Sloane calls out." We better try something else. This isn't working."
Ferris, Sloane and I sit in the hot tub of some random house in our underwear. Ferris and I have lived with each other long enough to eliminate any awkwardness, but if Cameron wasn't completely lifeless, I would never be doing this.
"You feeling any better, Cameron?" Ferris asks, shoving Oreos into his mouth. No response as expected.
"Cameron, why don't you come in here? It's really nice! Plus, Meave has no shirt or pants on." Sloane pleads, clearly trying everything to get him to show some proof of life. He remained on a chair, resting on the diving board. "Cameron, I could flip out really easy, too. It's ok. Sooner or later, everyone goes to the zoo."
I see Cameron look down to the water, the first real movement for an hour.
"Maybe he's really sick." We all looked at each other. "Maybe he isn't just torturing himself." He leans forward suddenly, plunging into the cold pool. Wasting no time, I get up and throw myself into the water, spearing no time for second glances. Using my little strength, I wrap my arms around him, kicking off the floor while trying to avoid the sinking chair. I feel Ferris help me, dragging his seemingly still lifeless body to rest on the step. His eyes remain closed as I beg.
"Hey, Hey." Fearful tears slip out the corners of my eyes, mixing with chlorinated water dripping from my curls.
"Hey, Cameron." Ferris grabs his face smacking it before yelling. "Cameron, Cam, wake up!" I place kisses to his face as Ferris backs off, giving him and I space.
"Come on Cam, Baby, wake up please." I plead, my voice breaking, the tears dropping onto his chest as I rub his face gently. He stirs, taking in breaths but not waking up. "Shit, please Cam, wake up, I need you." I beg in a genuine state of fear.
His eyes, blink open, staring into space and zoning into my crying eyes with a smile.
"Maeve Bueller, you're my hero." He says in a stupid voice with a grin covering his face.
"Are you joking, you asshole!" Sloane and Ferris roll their eyes. Mine wondered in embarrassment.
"That was really impressive, you were crying and everything." I punch him in the bicep, wincing when my fist meets his hard arm. "You bitch! Oh, you son of a bitch I thought you were dead." I shove water in his face, and he wraps an arm around me yanking me into the pool. I grab Ferris on the way down, pulling him in with me. Ferris gets back up and grabs Sloane, pushing her into the water.
