Alien

We both danced around the room, listening to some kind of jazz music blast from the stereo.

"Fer how much longer is this going to take? I'm bored!" I complained to him, hoping he might find something to do. As he searched around the room for our next activity, the ringtone of the loud red phone rang out, making us both run and pick it up, holding it close to both our ears so we could hear it.

"Bueller household, this is Ferris and Maeve, who am I speaking to?" Ferris spoke into the phone nonchalantly.

"Please, do not yank my cork on this. How desperate is the situation?" The voice of Steven Fenway said. Steven Fenway was a freshman, who had a desperate crush on me, and a more concerning obsession with Ferris.

"Well, did you see Alien?" Ferris has got to be kidding. "When that, uh, creature was in that guy's stomach?" Gasps ring out from the other side of the line. "It kind of feels like that." He drops the phone down and covers the microphone, clearly not wanting to be heard.

"Freshmen." He sighs.

"They really are too stupid for their own good." We both resume our previous positions, going back to how we were.

"Goddam, Meave is he kidding." Steven questions me, obviously not trusting my brothers' vague descriptions of our mysterious illness.

"No, Steven I promise he's not kidding, I feel like I'm giving birth to satans spawn!" Clearly only believing after I backed Ferris up, he takes a second and apologies to Ferris for not believing him.

"No, of course I'm not kidding. Do I sound like I'm kidding?" He speaks sternly into the phone, mocking the voice of his history teacher subconsciously. He presses his keys to his keyboard and holds the phone close to it. Instead of notes coming out, a sneeze comes out, making me snicker in shock.

"Look, we appreciate you guys telling us how you're doing. We gotta buzz. Keep a good thought, dude. Also, Maeve, call me after school?" He's asking me to call him. He sounds nervous, I feel bad, but I have my sights on someone else.

"No, thanks Steven, I'm a bit busy trying not to barf up a lung." Yes, I was using an excuse Ferris made up earlier, petty I know. I didn't want to flat out reject him in front of my brother and his friends.

"Ok." Ferris interjects awkwardly, obviously trying to steer the conversation and get him off the phone. He presses random keys on his keyboard, pained sounds of coughs and sneezes come out.

"Wait a minute, give me somebody else."

"Yeah, sure, hold on."

"Hello?" A female voice rings out. An unfamiliar one but none the less.

"Hi, Ferris, how's your bod?" A flirty tone passes through the phone, as I roll my eyes and stand up to leave, only for Ferris to grab my wrist and pull me back onto my seat. He pushes more buttons, more of his literally sick soundboard coming out. He must have been prepared for this day for a while.

"Oh my god, you're dying?" Her shock clear though the phone, she actually believed it.

"Uh-oh!" Completely giving up on sounding real, he pressed his hand flat down on the keyboard, sounds ringing out all at once.

"Is it serious?"

"Uh, we don't know. I hope not." He looks at me, signalling for me to say something.

"I think we may need kidney transplants." He gives me a thumbs up, signalling that I've said the right thing.

"Shit. Are you upset?" Ferris presses more keys, clearly bored and trying to get us off the phone.
