As the days passed, Killua and Gon's stolen moments became more precious. Every meeting felt like a lifeline, a brief escape from the suffocating weight of the future. They shared more laughter, more quiet conversations, and more of themselves with each other. But in the back of Killua's mind, he knew that this peace couldn't last forever.
One evening, as they sat together on the balcony of Killua's chambers, watching the sunset, Killua leaned against Gon's shoulder, feeling the warmth of his presence. The sky was a brilliant mix of oranges and purples, casting a soft glow over the palace.
"I wish we could just stay like this," Killua murmured, his voice barely audible over the sound of the wind.
Gon rested his head against Killua's, his voice soft. "Me too."
But they both knew that the calm wouldn't last. The queen's plans were still in motion, and the storm was coming. They could feel it in the air, in the quiet moments that felt too good to be true.
But for now, in this fleeting moment of happiness, they held onto each other, knowing that no matter what happened, they would face it together.
And that, for Killua, was enough.
As the weeks passed, Killua and Gon continued their secret meetings, carving out moments of peace in the chaos of the palace. Every stolen hour, every conversation under the stars, felt like a brief reprieve from the crushing reality that loomed over them. But as much as they tried to enjoy their time together, both of them could sense the storm gathering on the horizon.
The queen had grown increasingly impatient with the delays to the marriage. Though she never spoke of it directly to Killua, her actions made it clear that she would no longer tolerate any resistance. The court, too, seemed to be watching more closely, their eyes lingering on Killua as if they expected him to break at any moment.
And despite his efforts to keep his spirits high, Killua could feel the noose tightening around him.
One evening, after sneaking away to meet Gon in a hidden passage beneath the palace, Killua felt the weight of everything pressing down on him more heavily than ever. Gon had just returned from another mission, but this time, Killua could see the exhaustion in his eyes, the weariness in his movements.
"You okay?" Killua asked, his voice quiet as they sat together on the cold stone floor of the passage. He didn't like how tired Gon looked. It reminded him that, despite their best efforts, the world outside their stolen moments was relentless.
Gon nodded, though his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah, just tired. Missions have been... intense."
Killua frowned, his heart clenching. He hated that Gon was being sent on mission after mission, as if the kingdom were deliberately trying to keep him away. It wasn't just exhausting him—it was pulling them apart.
"Do you think it's her?" Killua asked, his voice low. "Sending you on all these missions to keep you away from me?"
Gon sighed, leaning his head back against the stone wall. "Maybe. Or maybe it's just coincidence. Either way, it feels like we're running out of time."
Killua's chest tightened. He had been trying to ignore it, but Gon was right. The marriage was still looming, and the queen had been moving her pieces into place. The court was watching them more closely than ever, and the window of time for them to find a way out was closing fast.
"I hate this," Killua muttered, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. "I hate that she's doing this to us. I hate that we can't just... be together without all of this hanging over us."
