Louis' POV:
I sat stiffly in the chair, hands gripping the armrests, as Dr. Patel explained the next steps. I tried to focus on what she was saying, but my mind was racing. Four different hearing aids. Four different possibilities, but what if none of them worked? What if this was just another thing that didn't bring me back to normal?
Harry was beside me, his knee pressed against mine, grounding me like he always did. He was calm, his hand resting on his lap, but I could feel his attention on me. He knew how much this moment mattered.
Dr. Patel gently handed me the first pair. They felt awkward in my ears—big and uncomfortable. When she switched them on, a wave of static hit me, and then... faint sounds. Muffled, distant. I blinked, trying to make sense of what I was hearing, but it was like listening through a thick wall. I shook my head, my stomach twisting. This wasn't right.
She smiled reassuringly, like she'd seen this reaction a thousand times before, and pulled out the second pair. They were smaller, fitting more comfortably, but when she turned them on, the sounds came through sharp, almost painful. Every little noise was harsh and jarring. I winced, glancing at Harry, who gave me a soft, supportive smile.
"We'll find the right ones," he signed, his fingers moving slowly, as if he could see how overwhelmed I was.
The third set wasn't much better. The sounds were faint, muffled again, and I couldn't make out anything. It felt like I was sinking deeper into disappointment, the hope I'd been holding onto slipping away with each failed attempt.
I sighed heavily as Dr. Patel handed me the fourth and final pair. These ones were sleek, barely noticeable in my ears. I closed my eyes as she turned them on, bracing myself for more static, more disappointment. But instead, the sounds came in softly, clear and balanced. I could hear the faint hum of the air conditioner, the shuffle of papers on Dr. Patel's desk, and then, just as I opened my eyes... I heard Harry.
"Can you hear me?" he asked softly, his voice quiet but there. His voice. It wasn't perfect, but it was him.
I froze, blinking rapidly as the reality of it hit me. Tears welled up in my eyes before I could stop them, spilling over and running down my cheeks. I looked at Harry, my chest tightening with emotion. He was smiling, his eyes glistening too, and I signed back, my hands shaking, "I can hear you."
His face broke into a wide smile, and before I knew it, he pulled me into his arms, holding me tight. I buried my face in his shoulder, the tears coming faster now. It felt like a piece of me had been given back, something I thought I'd lost forever.
We stayed like that for a while, just holding onto each other, until Dr. Patel cleared her throat gently, reminding us she was still there. I pulled back, wiping at my eyes, and Harry gave my hand a comforting squeeze.
"These hearing aids seem to be the best fit for you," Dr. Patel signed, her smile warm and patient. "They'll take some getting used to, but they should help you regain a lot of what you've lost."
She handed me a small sheet of paper with care instructions, explaining how to clean them, charge them, and make sure they stay in good condition. Harry took the sheet and slipped it into his pocket, making sure I wouldn't have to worry about forgetting anything.
After we thanked her, we headed to the receptionist's desk. I was still in a bit of a daze, the world around me sounding sharper, more alive. Harry paid for the hearing aids, talking to the receptionist while I stood there, absorbing everything. I could hear the tapping of the keyboard, the faint murmur of voices in the distance. It was surreal, like waking up from a long, heavy dream.
We walked out of the office and into the bright afternoon sun. Harry wrapped his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close as we headed to the car. He didn't sign anything, didn't say anything out loud, but his presence was enough. I rested my head against the window on the drive home, listening to the steady hum of the engine, the soft thrum of the tires on the road. It felt so ordinary, and yet, after everything, it was extraordinary.
When we got back to our apartment , we headed straight to our bedroom. I was exhausted, the day's emotions catching up with me fast. I slipped off my shoes and crawled into his bed, feeling the soft, familiar comfort of his sheets. Harry followed, sitting beside me and reaching out to gently take out my hearing aids.
He was so careful, so gentle, as if they were the most precious thing. He placed them in the small case Dr. Patel had given us and set it on the bedside table to charge. Then, he slid into bed next to me, pulling me into his arms like he always did.
I buried my face in his chest, listening to the sound of his breathing, slow and steady. I could hear it now, the soft rise and fall, and it brought me a kind of peace I hadn't felt in weeks.
"I'm proud of you," Harry signed slowly against my back, his touch light, soothing.
I didn't need to respond. I just held onto him, feeling the warmth of his body against mine, and let the steady rhythm of his breathing lull me to sleep. For the first time in what felt like forever, I fell asleep feeling whole, knowing that no matter what came next, I wasn't facing it alone.
