Louis' POV:

I woke up slowly, the morning light filtering through our curtains, casting a soft glow around the room. It took me a moment to remember where I was—our room, in our bed, with him holding me close. For the first time in weeks, I felt rested. Not just physically, but emotionally. My mind wasn't racing like it usually did. Instead, there was a calmness, a quiet I hadn't known I needed.

Harry's arm was draped over my waist, his breathing steady against my neck. I could hear it. That thought alone made me smile—a real, genuine smile that felt like it came from somewhere deep. I shifted slightly in his embrace, careful not to wake him, and my fingers brushed the small case on the bedside table where my hearing aids were charging.

The hearing aids. Yesterday had been such a whirlwind, and now, thinking about it, it almost felt unreal. I'd gone so long without hearing, without connecting to the world in that way, that being able to hear Harry's voice again felt like a miracle. The memory of it—the softness of his words, the way he looked at me when I said I could hear him—came rushing back, and I felt that same tightness in my chest, but this time, it was because of hope, not fear.

I rolled over slightly, facing Harry now, and watched him for a moment. His hair was a mess, falling over his forehead in a way that made him look even softer, more peaceful. I gently traced my fingers over his cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin under my touch. He stirred slightly, his eyes fluttering open, and when he saw me watching him, he smiled that slow, sleepy smile I loved so much.

"Morning," he mumbled, his voice quiet and rough from sleep. I could hear it. I didn't need my hearing aids to understand him this close, but the sound of his voice, even in the quiet, made my heart swell.

I smiled back, leaning in to press a soft kiss to his cheek before signing, "Morning."

He lifted his hand, brushing a strand of hair from my face, and then his expression shifted slightly—more awake now, more focused. "How do you feel?" he signed, his fingers moving with that familiar ease, but his eyes full of concern.

I thought about it for a second. Yesterday had been overwhelming. There had been a lot of tears, a lot of emotions I didn't quite know how to handle, but now... now I felt lighter. "Better," I signed back. "Like... I can breathe again."

Harry's face softened, and he nodded, pulling me in closer until I was pressed against his chest, his arms wrapped securely around me. We didn't say anything for a while, just stayed there in the quiet, listening to each other's breathing, to the sound of the world slowly waking up outside.

After a few minutes, I pulled back slightly and gestured to the case on the table. "Should I try them?" I signed, feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement bubbling up inside me again. Yesterday had been the first step, but now I wanted to see if the hearing aids would continue to help me feel connected again.

Harry nodded, giving me an encouraging smile as he reached over and grabbed the small case. He handed it to me, and I carefully opened it, pulling out the tiny devices. They were sleek, barely noticeable once they were in, but the weight of what they represented felt heavy in my hands.

I took a deep breath before slipping them in, adjusting them until they fit comfortably. Harry waited, watching me closely, his expression full of quiet anticipation. Then, I switched them on.

At first, the room filled with the soft, familiar hum of sound—the rustling of the blankets, the faint creak of the bed frame as we moved. And then, there it was again—Harry's voice.

"Can you hear me?" he asked softly, his voice clear, just like yesterday.

I nodded, tears already stinging my eyes. It still felt overwhelming, this ability to hear again, to not feel so cut off from everything. "Yeah," I signed back, my fingers shaking slightly. "I can hear you."

Harry grinned, his eyes sparkling as he reached out to pull me into a tight hug, his hand sliding up to rest on the back of my neck. I held onto him, feeling the warmth of his body against mine, letting the steady rhythm of his breathing calm me.

We stayed like that for a long time, neither of us saying anything, just holding each other. I could hear the faint noises from the world outside—the birds chirping, a car passing by in the distance—but it all felt far away, like the only thing that mattered was this moment, here with him.

Eventually, Harry pulled back slightly, his hand still resting on my cheek as he signed, "Are you hungry? I can make us something to eat."

I nodded, realizing for the first time that I was actually starving. I hadn't even thought about food with everything that had happened yesterday, but now, the idea of breakfast sounded like a good next step.

We got up slowly, moving in a comfortable rhythm with each other. Harry slipped on a pair of sweats, and I grabbed one of his oversized hoodies from the chair near the bed, pulling it over my head. It smelled like him—like comfort and home—and it made me feel safe.

As we headed  to the kitchen, Harry kept glancing over at me, checking to see if I was okay. I couldn't help but smile at his protectiveness. He'd been like this since the accident, always making sure I was taken care of, even when I wasn't sure how to take care of myself.

"Pancakes?" he asked as we entered the kitchen, already grabbing the ingredients from the pantry.

I nodded eagerly, leaning against the counter as I watched him move around the kitchen. He was humming softly to himself as he worked, and the sound of it made my chest ache in the best way. I could hear his voice again. It was still sinking in, but it was real. This was real.

As I sat at the kitchen table, waiting for breakfast, I couldn't help but think about how different things felt now. Everything wasn't fixed—not by a long shot—but it felt like we were finally heading in the right direction. I didn't know what the future would look like, or how long it would take for me to fully adjust to this new way of living, but with Harry by my side, I knew I'd be okay.

One step at a time, I reminded myself. One step at a time.
