Louis' POV:
I woke up to the soft warmth of the morning sun filtering through the curtains, casting a gentle glow across the room. The bed was warm, and Harry was beside me, still fast asleep, his arm draped over my waist. His face was relaxed, peaceful, and I could hear his slow, even breaths—one of the few sounds that made me feel grounded lately.
For a moment, I just lay there, watching him, feeling the quiet comfort of having him so close. His presence always made everything feel less heavy, like I didn't have to carry the weight of the world by myself. I shifted slightly, turning toward him and nuzzling into his chest. The soft scent of him filled the air, and I sighed in contentment, pressing closer, feeling the steady rhythm of his heart under my cheek.
Harry stirred a little, his arm tightening around me as he mumbled something incoherent in his sleep. I smiled, watching him as he slowly woke up, blinking his eyes open, still hazy with sleep. His lips curled into a lazy smile when he saw me, and he gave a soft, sleepy hum.
"Morning," I signed quietly, my hands moving slowly in the soft light of the room.
Harry grinned, pulling me closer, his arms wrapping tighter around me as he buried his face in my hair. "Morning," he whispered against my skin, even though I couldn't hear the words. I felt them, though, the way they brushed softly against my neck.
We stayed like that for a while, just lying there in the quiet, tangled up in each other. It was one of those mornings where nothing felt rushed, where the world outside didn't matter as much as this—just being here with him. Harry's fingers absentmindedly traced patterns on my back, and I let myself relax into his warmth, enjoying the way his body fit so perfectly against mine.
Eventually, though, the reality of the day started to creep in. School. Responsibilities. As much as I wanted to stay in bed with Harry forever, we both knew we had to get up. Harry shifted, pressing a kiss to the top of my head before sitting up, stretching his arms over his head. I watched him for a second, admiring the way the sunlight caught the soft angles of his face.
"Time to get ready," he signed, giving me a gentle nudge as he stood up and headed toward the bathroom.
I sighed and sat up, running a hand through my hair as I slowly pulled myself out of bed. The room was still quiet, the morning light soft and golden, making everything feel a little more manageable. I grabbed some clothes from the closet and started getting ready, moving through the familiar motions of getting dressed and gathering my things for the day.
Harry emerged from the bathroom a few minutes later, fully dressed and running his fingers through his messy curls. He gave me a quick, playful grin as he slipped past me, grabbing his backpack from the corner of the room. I smiled back, feeling that small flicker of warmth in my chest, the kind that always sparked whenever he looked at me like that.
Just as we were about to head out the door, Harry stopped and reached into his bag. He pulled out a small, familiar case—the one that held my hearing aids. He turned toward me, his expression soft but serious, and handed me the case.
"Put them in," he signed, his movements slow and deliberate. "And don't take them off. Not today. Not ever."
I hesitated for a second, staring at the case in his hand. The memory of yesterday—of not wearing them, of the quiet, of the way I'd felt safe in the silence—flashed through my mind. But I also remembered the way Harry had signed to me in math class, the way he'd had to translate everything, and the way I'd missed the bell because I couldn't feel the vibrations. As much as the silence was comforting, I knew I couldn't hide from the world forever.
Harry stepped closer, his eyes meeting mine with a gentle intensity. "Nothing defines you as different," he signed, his fingers brushing against mine as he handed me the case. "You're just Louis. The same boy I fell in love with. You're not broken, and these—" he pointed to the case, "don't make you any less you."
His words hit me hard, the weight of them settling in my chest. I swallowed, feeling a lump rise in my throat. He always knew what to say, always knew how to make me feel seen—like I wasn't something to be fixed, like I was whole just as I was.
I took the case from his hand, feeling the familiar shape of it in my palm. After a long moment, I nodded and opened it, carefully taking out the hearing aids and placing them in my ears. The world rushed back in—soft, distant sounds at first, but then sharper, more distinct. I could hear the faint hum of the house, the soft creak of the floorboards under Harry's feet, and the rustle of fabric as he shifted beside me.
I looked up at him, and he smiled, reaching out to gently squeeze my shoulder. "That's better," he signed, his fingers moving slowly, reassuringly. "You don't have to hide."
I smiled back, my chest feeling a little lighter. He was right. As hard as it was sometimes, I couldn't keep retreating into silence. The hearing aids didn't make me weak, and they didn't change who I was. I was still Louis, and I was still me.
"Okay," I signed, my hands steady. "I'll keep them in."
Harry grinned, his eyes lighting up as he leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to my forehead. "Good," he signed. "Now let's go. We've got a whole day ahead of us."
I nodded, grabbing my bag and following him out the door. The world didn't feel so overwhelming with Harry by my side, his hand reaching for mine as we headed out into the morning. Whatever the day brought, I knew I could handle it—with him, with the hearing aids, and with the knowledge that I was still me.
And that was enough.
