NAUGHTY AND COERCIVE.
Two of the things she'd just figured about Everest Miller.
"Never do that again," she warned when they drove past a group of students.
He laughed
"Seriously. I'm not incapacitated"
"You were being stubborn, someone had to do something" he shrugged in his defence.
She glared at his side profile, his eyes watched the road like he didn't feel her gaze.
"Something on my face, Wednesday?" He asked teasingly and she broke her gaze. A blush coming on.
"Naughty..." She grumbled
"What was that?"
"Drive"
"I heard it" he grinned and she rolled her eyes. "Funny enough, you don't know a thing about me other than what you do and you've already concluded on how I am,"
"Isn't it obvious? You're the hotshot of this story, it's expected"
He laughed, one that made her feel good a tad.
She didn't think she had it in her to make someone laugh.
"You're funny as hell"
She folded her arms "It's facts"
"Is it? Okay, if I'm the hotshot, you are?"
She eyed him "I'm me"
He snorted "Lame."
She rolled her eyes again "You're lame"
"If I'm hotshot guy, you must be the tough girl who's actually his secret admirer"
"What? In a thousand years, NO"
He grinned coyly "And she denies it"
"I'm not denying anything. Stop being annoying"
"Oh so I'm right? "
"No!"
"Aw, that sucks" he fake pouted and she heaved out loudly.
This is what the professor was trying to say earlier.
He reached for the radio and she didn't object. She needed to put her thoughts on hold. Until he turned it down and spoke "How do you know Ren?"
She turned to him, confused
"Oren" he corrected
Oh. Ugh.
"I really don't and why do you care?"
He shrugged and adjusted the rear view mirror.
His phone rang in his pocket and he hissed.
"What are you trying to do?" She asked with a raised brow when he tried to reach for it.
"Isn't it obvious, sweetheart?"
"Don't get us killed!"
He sighed and got out his phone.
She watched him and watched the road, anxious when he was only gripping the wheel with one hand.
He looked down at his phone briefly "Dang. Wednesday is there any chance we can cancel?"
Her head turned sharply but he was still looking ahead as he drove "How can you do that?"
" No?"
" Well where are we even going?"
"I was thinking my place but then I've got some scores to settle now and..." He groaned
She shook her head " I'll stop " she said abruptly
" What?" He asked like he didn't get that
"Stop here, I'll get down so you can go where you have to"
" Oh, well I'm guessing you'll see me as—"
"I'm good" she voiced. She really did need to sleep soon.
He looked at her for a time before bringing his car to a halt. "Sorry for ditching"
"You're not," she stepped down "Besides, you have scores to settle"
He pulled a one-sided smile "Be safe" and he drove off.
Asher stood on the town's side walk, watching until she could no longer see his car. Somehow she felt watched and looked over her shoulders.
As always, no one.
She crossed the street and made her way home.
She pulled off her jacket and crawled into bed, a recurrent headache taking it's toll.
Her curtains remained closed putting the room in darkness. She turned on her lamp and it felt better, slightly.
When she relaxed further into bed, her thoughts came alive.
She thought about life.
People's lives in general. About how nobody was who they always appeared to be.
About how much she knew and didn't know about the people she knew.
About how she'd see people if she knew who they really were.
It came to a conclusion.
People would always be like that, never understanding.
