Daenerys had grown accustomed to being left behind. Her mother perhaps had been the only one who had not left by choice. It was difficult for Dany to grieve over someone she had never known save the stories of others, but as a child she felt that loss nonetheless. Though over the years she had grown out of this habit, in her childhood she often lay in bed, imagining what her life may have been like were her mother still alive. In those day dreams she imagined herself to be more beautiful, older, more certain; and most of all more cared for.
She resided on Dragonstone with her older brother Viserys, and while she was taken care of, she had never truly known love from her family. Viserys had been a strict guardian, always provide her that as the blood of the dragon, they must always be the image of perfection. Rhaegar, her older brother, was busy ruling the Seven Kings from the iron throne in Kings Landing. He had relationships to mend, a dynasty to rebuild and children of his own that he needed to shape into the perfect Targaryens.
She hardly saw Rhaegar and his children, save for the times she would travel there for an important event. When she did see them, her brother greeted her politely, but was never warm. She only seemed to get on with her niece Rhaenys and nephew Jon. Rhaenys was a few years older than Dany, but she always showed her kindness and played with her when she visited. They even exchanged letters when Daenerys would leave to stay in touch with one another. As for Jon, he was kinder than her own brother and would often play with her and Rhaenys when they asked.
Despite that Daenerys had no other friends. Not many young girls stayed on Dragonstone and when they did come with their families, they would leave too soon to truly become acquainted with. It wasn't ideal, but it was all she ever knew and she'd rather take this lonely familiar life than the unfamiliar one that soon awaited her in the North.
Viserys always made sure to remind Daenerys that she would one day travel North to wed the heir of Winterfell. When he had first ever told her about her betrothal, she was indifferent about it, knowing that many ladies and lords had to marry out of duty. However, her feelings soon became those of fear and dread when she learned about the history among House Stark and House Targaryen. How her father had been responsible for the death of Rickard and Brandon Stark. How her own brother, had brought dishonor to Lyanna Stark. And now she was expected to go North and to bring peace once and for all among these two houses.
Her brother hardly made it any better when he described the harsh Northern climate and its "savage inhabitants" as he referred to them. Claiming that northerners were barbarians who clung to their old beliefs, but that it was also the biggest Kingdom amongst the seven so Rhaegar had no choice but to make amends. The Starks were beloved and well respected in the North, if Rhaegar didn't have their support the Northern lords would follow. Dany was not looking forward to going all the way North, knowing that all her kin would be so far away. Even if they held no love for her, she at least knew they would not harm her.
