JUNE 8th 2018

During the rest of the week, Nicholas had gone silent again. Ever since they kissed in his car like two teenagers in a rom-com, he had disappeared. Kyomi thought he'd left early since he hadn't been around for most of the week. But then she saw him leave a beach hut with another girl, about his age. They were holding hands, smiling, and staring at each other. It looked like they'd just hooked up.

Now, Kyomi was walking in the sand with Jenn, discussing this week's game. That was when she realized her father was right: Guys were a distraction.

All she could think about was Nicholas, even though she didn't want to.

She felt upset, though she knew she didn't have the right. They weren't dating, but she thought she meant something to him. She thought wrong. It was Friday, and tomorrow was game day. Normally, Kyomi wasn't nervous—usually, she was calm and excited. But now, she was having a mental breakdown in her head.

Kyomi kicked at the sand, trying to shake off her frustration as Jenn talked beside her, unaware of what was going on in Kyomi's mind.

They had gone over game plans, but nothing stuck. Her mind kept circling back to Nicholas and Sebastian, driving her crazy.

She knew she shouldn't be upset. They hadn't defined what they were, and they weren't exclusive. But it still hurt to see him with someone else, like they didn't have a history. She felt something for him since they first met. Did he not feel the same?

And then, there was what Sebastian had said...

"You good?" Jenn asked, nudging her with her elbow.

Kyomi forced a smile. "Yeah, just thinking about tomorrow. Big game."

Jenn gave her a look, clearly not convinced, but didn't push further. "You've got this. You don't fold under pressure."

Kyomi nodded, appreciating her confidence, but inside, she was unraveling. She wasn't sure if it was because of Nicholas, the game, or both. The weight of everything felt like it was crushing her, and she couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to go wrong.

That night, sitting alone in her room, Kyomi tried to focus on anything but him. She watched old game videos on her phone, listened to music, but nothing worked. Her thoughts always drifted back to him.

Finally, she checked her phone. No messages. No calls. The silence felt louder than anything. She stared at his name in her contacts, her thumb hovering over the screen. Should she text him? Ask what was going on? But then again, why should she? He had clearly moved on, and she needed to do the same.
