Zhan walked home with a sense of clarity that had eluded him for weeks. Each step felt like a declaration of independence, a promise to himself that he would no longer tolerate being treated as a second choice. He had faced Chen, confronted his fears, and emerged on the other side with newfound determination.

Yet, as he approached his house, a wave of anxiety washed over him. With the wedding fast approaching, he needed to focus on what lay ahead—not on the ghosts of the past. His parents were eager for him to finalize arrangements, and he needed to step up and embrace his new life with Yibo.

That evening, Zhan joined his family for dinner, and the atmosphere was vibrant, filled with laughter and chatter. His parents were discussing final details of the wedding, and Zhan felt a strange mix of excitement and dread.

“Zhan, did you finalize the guest list?” his mother, Xiao Lee, asked as she served him a portion of rice.

“Almost, Mom,” Zhan replied, trying to sound cheerful. “I just need to confirm a couple more people.”

“Good! We want this to be perfect,” his father, Xiao Huang, chimed in, a proud smile on his face. “This is a significant moment for our family.”

Zhan nodded, feeling the weight of their expectations. The wedding wasn’t just about him anymore; it was a union of families, a merging of lives. He glanced at the wedding invitation sitting on the table, the elegant script and shimmering gold accents reflecting the excitement of the day to come.

“Have you thought about the seating arrangements?” his mother continued, her voice a mixture of enthusiasm and concern. “We need to make sure everyone feels comfortable.”

“Yeah, I’m working on that,” Zhan said, forcing a smile. The last thing he wanted to do was let his parents down, especially after the turmoil of the past few weeks.

Later that evening, after dinner had ended and the dishes were cleared, Zhan found himself in his room, staring at the wedding invitation again. A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.

“Zhan, can we talk?” It was his mother.

“Sure, come in,” he replied, setting the invitation aside.

Xiao Lee entered, her expression serious yet caring. “I know things have been tough for you lately,” she began, sitting on the edge of his bed. “Have you thought about how you feel about the marriage?”

Zhan hesitated, his heart racing. “I… I think it’s what’s best for our families.”

His mother studied him closely. “You don’t sound convinced. Is there something else bothering you?”

He sighed, feeling the weight of his emotions. “It’s just that I thought my life would look different at this point. I didn’t expect to be marrying someone I barely know.”

“That’s understandable,” Xiao Lee said softly. “But marriage is also about growth. You and Yibo have a chance to build something meaningful together.”

“I know,” Zhan replied, running a hand through his hair. “It’s just hard to shake the feeling of being pushed into this. And then there’s Chen…” His voice trailed off, the pain still fresh in his heart.

His mother reached out, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay to feel conflicted, Zhan. Change is difficult, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. But sometimes, we have to embrace new beginnings, even if they come from unexpected circumstances.”

“I just wish I could be sure about all of this,” Zhan confessed, feeling vulnerable. “What if I end up regretting my decision?”

“You won’t know until you give it a chance,” Xiao Lee said gently. “Take the time to get to know Yibo. You may find that he surprises you.”

Zhan nodded, though uncertainty lingered. “I’ll try.”

“Good. I believe in you,” his mother said, standing up. “And remember, we’re all here for you, no matter what.”

After she left, Zhan lay back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He appreciated his mother’s support, but the road ahead still felt daunting. He decided he needed to take charge of his life and start preparing for his future with Yibo.

The next few days passed in a flurry of activity as Zhan dove into wedding preparations. He and his parents met with decorators and caterers, finalizing the details of the ceremony. Zhan even picked out a suit for Yibo, wanting to ensure everything was perfect for their big day.

Despite his busy schedule, Zhan found himself thinking about Yibo more often. The brief moments they had spent together at the café lingered in his mind, leaving him with a sense of curiosity. He wondered about Yibo’s world—the man behind the stern exterior, the one who had agreed to this arrangement.

One evening, as Zhan worked on the seating arrangements, his phone buzzed with a message from Yibo.

Yibo: “Hey, Zhan. Just checking in. How’s everything going with the preparations?”

Zhan’s heart raced as he read the message. He hadn’t expected to hear from Yibo so soon. He quickly typed back.

Zhan: “Pretty busy, but it’s coming together. How about you? Are you ready for this?”

A moment later, Yibo replied.

Yibo: “As ready as I’ll ever be, I suppose. It’s a big step for both of us.”

Zhan could feel the tension in those words, a mixture of apprehension and determination.

Zhan: “I think we can make this work. We just need to get to know each other better.”

Yibo: “Agreed. Maybe we can meet again before the wedding? It might help ease the tension.”

Zhan: “I’d like that. How about this weekend?”

Yibo: “Perfect. Let’s do something fun. I’ll plan it.”

Zhan felt a thrill of excitement at the prospect of spending more time with Yibo. Perhaps this was the chance he needed to understand the man he was marrying and to see if there was more to Yibo than what met the eye.

As the week drew to a close, Zhan found himself looking forward to their outing. It was a welcome distraction, and he hoped it would bring clarity to his feelings.

But deep down, he couldn’t help but wonder if he could truly let go of the past and embrace this new future. He needed to be honest with himself: this marriage could lead to something beautiful, but only if both he and Yibo were willing to take the leap together.
