The air in the dining room grew thick with anticipation as Zhan’s father cleared his throat, signaling the start of the discussion about the wedding plans. Zhan felt a knot tighten in his stomach, a mix of anxiety and trepidation. He had tried to prepare himself for this moment, but now that it was here, he felt entirely unready.
“We’re excited about this union,” Zhan’s father, Xiao Huang, began, his voice steady yet warm. “It represents not just a joining of our families but also a new beginning for both of you.”
Yibo remained silent, his gaze fixed on the table, giving nothing away. Zhan couldn’t help but wonder what was going through his mind. Did he feel the same weight of expectation? Or was he simply unfazed by the whirlwind that was about to unfold?
“First, we should discuss the date,” Zhan’s mother, Xiao Lee, interjected, pulling out a notepad. “We’re thinking of a spring wedding—something fresh and beautiful. What do you both think?”
Zhan’s heart raced. A spring wedding? It felt so soon, so real. He shot a quick glance at Yibo, who remained impassive. “That sounds nice,” Zhan said, trying to sound enthusiastic. “Spring symbolizes new beginnings, after all.”
Yibo nodded slightly, but his expression didn’t change. “I suppose it makes sense,” he said, his voice calm but lacking any genuine enthusiasm.
“Perfect!” Zhan’s mother beamed. “We can start planning right away. I want it to be a memorable event for both families. A celebration of love and unity!”
“Love,” Zhan thought bitterly. Was that even a part of this equation? He took a deep breath, trying to push aside his concerns. They had to make this work, for his family’s sake and his own.
As the conversation continued, Zhan’s parents dove into details about the venue, catering, and guest lists. They discussed floral arrangements and the theme of the wedding, with Zhan’s mother excitedly flipping through magazines for inspiration. Zhan felt increasingly overwhelmed by the rapid pace of planning. Where was he in all of this? He was just a pawn in a game he hadn’t agreed to play.
Finally, Yibo broke his silence. “Maybe we should consider our preferences as well,” he said, his voice low but firm. Zhan looked at him, surprised. This was the first time he had heard Yibo voice an opinion about the wedding.
“Of course!” Zhan’s father replied, his expression brightening. “What do you have in mind?”
Yibo paused, his brow furrowing slightly as he seemed to choose his words carefully. “I’d prefer something simple. A small ceremony with just close family. I don’t see the need for an extravagant event.”
Zhan’s heart sank. Simple? Was that how Yibo viewed their marriage—as just another business transaction? He had hoped for at least a hint of romance, but Yibo’s words suggested otherwise.
“That’s a good idea, Yibo,” Zhan’s mother said, though Zhan could sense her disappointment. “But I think a larger celebration would honor both families.”
“I disagree,” Yibo replied, his voice steady. “It’s not about impressing others. It’s about the commitment we’re making to each other.”
Zhan felt a flicker of admiration for Yibo’s stance, but it was quickly overshadowed by his frustration. Commitment? They hardly knew each other. How could they make a commitment without understanding what they were signing up for?
“Perhaps we can compromise,” Zhan suggested, trying to mediate the growing tension. “A small ceremony with a modest reception? It could still be special without being overly extravagant.”
Yibo met Zhan’s gaze, and for a brief moment, Zhan thought he saw a glimmer of appreciation in his eyes. “That could work,” Yibo said finally, nodding slightly. “As long as it stays intimate.”
