Chapter Three: Shadows of the Heart

As graduation approached, Nastasia found herself engulfed in a whirlwind of emotions. The excitement of graduating alongside her childhood best friends, Elina and Sofia, has been enough to fill her with joy. But instead, the looming milestone brought with it a wave of uncertainty. The future felt like a vast, unknown sea, and her heart clung to the only constant she had ever known.

Their eyes met in passing moments, heavy with what remained unsaid. Once, those moments had been a source of warmth, but now, they felt like fleeting moments slipping through her fingers. She had always been so good at hiding her feelings behind the veil of false hope, never daring to cross that invisible line. But the more she thought about leaving, the more the ache in her chest grew as if her unspoken longing for him echoed the familiarity of their shared past.

The weight of her unspoken feelings felt heavier than the graduation gown that enveloped her. She felt like an outsider, trapped in uncertainty. What if Asher never felt the same way? The fear of rejection gripped her heart, whispering doubts that perhaps he saw her as just a girl he used to know. Did he see her the way she saw him? The laughter and joy around her felt like a cruel contrast to the storm inside her head. She longed to share her feelings, to take that leap of faith, but fear held her back. Nastasia's insecurities clawed at her. She feared rejection more than anything, not just from Asher, but from the possibility that she would never be loved the way she craved, because of her complexity. The depth of her heart felt like a puzzle, one she was unsure anyone could solve. What if she ruined everything? What if, she lost the cherished connections she had built over the years? What if, in the process of seeking more, she lost everything?

As graduation day drew closer, the weight of her thoughts became almost unbearable. She would sit in class, wondering if he thought the same about her, if he felt any of the tension that buzzed just beneath the surface. She replayed every moment as if searching for hidden clues.

One afternoon,  Elina, Sofia and Nastasia sat together in the school courtyard, and their conversation turned to their plans for after graduation. They were wrapped up in the excitement of the future, eager for what came next. She envied their certainty, their ability to embrace the unknown without the paralyzing fear that haunted her every thought. Sofia was excited about moving to a new city for university, and Elina was planning to stay closer to home.

Nastasia's heart pounded in her chest as the reality of it hit her. This was it. The time they had spent together was coming to an end. What if she never saw him again until it was too late? What if the distance created by their separate paths shattered any chance she had?

​Later that evening, as she sat under the stars, her thoughts wandered to the countless memories made within the school's familiar walls. Laughter with Elina and Sofia echoed in her mind—moments of joy, shared secrets, and late-night talks filled with dreams and fears. With graduation just days away, she felt the weight of nostalgia settle in. Each memory was a reminder that soon, everything would change, and the thought of leaving behind the friendships that had shaped her filled her with a bittersweet ache.

As the graduation ceremony approached, it became a constant reminder of time slipping away. Graduation symbolized not just an end but a beginning. But would she have the courage to step into the light, or would she remain forever in the shadows of her doubts about her future? Nastasia realized she was at a crossroads. Would she continue to let fear dictate her actions? Or would she finally gather the courage to step out of the shadows and risk it all for something that felt out of reach?
