Freshman year, where you go from being the coolest to the 'small-fry' whatever that meant. That's just what Colby's brother had told him. But before freshman year even really started Colby decided to join band camp.

It was pretty boring, in his opinion at least. He had met few new people, but two weeks away from his summer, in the blistering hot Kansas heat, that was no fun.

Sure he had seen a cute blonde boy, and got the courage to talk to him. But it was only around five words between the two of them.

"Chrissy Thomson is hot!" Sam whispered to the brunette who struggled to even form words.

"Yep-" he spoke, scurrying away from Sam quickly.

That all that had happened at band camp.

So there Colby was walking into school, backpack slung over his shoulder, schedule in hand. Barely ready to face the day. The only thing keeping him moving was the possibility of seeing Sam, the prettiest boy Colby had ever seen.

Colby knew he wasn't straight when he was about seven. Sweet boy at the playground, fell in love, told his parents he wanted to marry him, they gave him the gay talk, and he accepted his fate. His parents weren't particularly homophobic, but they did try to make him re-think his feelings for a while. I mean it's hard being queer in Kansas of all places.

But they accepted that their son liked boys, and that they would still love him. They weren't the perfect -parents, but they were good enough for Colby.

All thoughts rushed through Colby's head as he made his way to his locker. He had been given his locker number and code at the 'open-house' they week before band camp had started. Before he met Sam.

"Heyyy, Colby right?" laughed a sour familiar voice, that felt all-to-real to be in Colby's head. Colby whipped his head around to see a smiley blonde boy, holding his schedule in hand and opening the lover right next to Colby. "We sat next to each other at band camp- I'm... Sam? Do you remember?"

"Did Colby remember?" Like it was yesterday. But there was no way in hell he was saying that.

"O-oh, right. I remember you. Chrissy Thompson, right?" Colby chuckled awkwardly. Of course, Colby being Colby, he had to bring up the girl his crush liked in the second conversation literally ever.

"Yeah. I can't believe you remember that! She's kind of ugly now that I think of it. So she's all yours!"

Colby just nodded, knowing for a fact his face was redder than he thought was humanly possible. He couldn't for, any words so he just kept on nodding, as Sam looked at him very confused.

"So... what class do you have first?" Sam asked, reaching for Colby's schedule. Which he gladly gave to the blonde, trying to prevent another awkward interaction. "Cool! We have practically the same schedule! Except our math and PE's are switched. Want to walk to class together?"

Colby nodded, his face finally relaxing and turning more of a normal human shade. Following the excited boy towards their first class.

That's how they met, before the end of that day they considered each other best friends.Soon enough Colby met Sam's parents and Sam met Colby's. Their parents loved each others friendship and became close as well.

It was always 'Sam and Colby vs the world' always.

Colby never really got over his feelings, if he had to be completely honest, they ah only grown stronger. The more the two boys hung out, the more in love Colby felt. But it was nothing, I mean he just hoped it would be nothing.

Colby finally had a circle of really good friends, including their new friends Nate, Matt, and Jake. (Idfk why I always choose the same names, leave me alone ToT)

Who were all just as chaotic as the best friends. Bu6 everyone knew, there was a certain connection between the boys, their friends, their families, but of course the boys had no clue, because they are them.

Let's set the scene, think December, two weeks before winter break, two boys -laughing around, on the sidewalk that lined their, conveniently, close houses. The two messing around, letting the cold dead leaves crunch and blow away, with the late autumn breeze.

They were joking, talking about meeting up over break, school projects, stupid math tests, and funny enough, love.

"So you think Emma Jackson is hot? You have to raise your standards Sam!" Colby's words burned his own heart, knowing he couldn't have the, searingly perfect, boy next to him.

"Fine, if you don't like Emma, who do you like? Not still Chrissy I hope, we've both agreed she's very much not hot." Sam spoke, scrunching up his nose in repulse at Chrissy's name.

"No- no, definitely not." He laughed at the face the blonde was making. Before deciding to try and be serious and at least talk to Sam about his feelings. "What... what if... I liked... like... a boy? Would that be weird, if it is I'll shut up and we don't have to talk about it!"

Sam was slightly taken a back from this. Sure they had made gay jokes, but he could tell that Colby was completely serious in that moment. So Sam let himself pause. Reflect. Think a bit. Then something crossed his mind that immediately made him red.

"What if he likes me?"

He face was already red from the cold, but it was now red with warmth, something in that thought made him get a strange bubbly feeling. It almost felt... good? It was tingly and uncomfortable, but also a warm hug in the middle of a snow storm.

"That wouldn't be an issue." Sam said, letting Colby exhale after the long terrifying pause. Sam tried to forget the feeling, but every time Colby talked, it felt like it was fizzing back up. That terrified him.

~

It was the last day before winter break, and Sam couldn't even look at Colby without the fuzzy feeling engulfing his lungs, toxic gas that he couldn't escape from. Every look, every word, every light touch on Sam's arm, he was practically deceased right then and there.

He had made the bad decision to talk to Jake about it, who immediately said that Sam was in love, and tried to get him to tell him who it was. Even the thought of liking Colby, liking a boy, made Sam sick to his stomach.

For some reason, he was fine with other people being gay, but if it came down to it, he could never be that way. At least he wouldn't accept it. (Internalized homophobia is horrible :/ sorry Sam)

When he realized the true extent to his feelings, Colby had hugged him genuinely for the first time, he panicked. And that's when he started to push Colby away.

It started with not accepting as many of the invites to hang out as he previously did. Then it consisted of trying to faking sick, just to stay away. Ignoring texts and calls over Skype. Ignoring the brunettes questions in the halls and in class. And eventually ignoring a Colby and the group altogether.

Before Sam even knew it. He had broken up his entire friend group, over the simple possibility of a crush.

When school started up again, neither of them wanted to see each other. Because Sam didn't want to fall in love, and Colby already was.
