Sam was in love. He had always been in love. In love with his best friend. The brunette he met at band camp in their freshman year, the boy he knew would be his best friend forever.
But Colby didn't love him.
Without Sam's knowledge Colby had been talking to this girl, her name, Malia.
She was an older girl, a senior, they were only juniors. She had black hair, red highlights, multiple piercings. Of course Colby liked her. She was his entire type poured into a jar, shaken up, and pour out into a girl.
Sam could never be her.
So when he found out that Colby had asked her to be his girlfriend, his heart shattered. They were dating. And Colby could never like Sam.
The blonde, skinny (no hate, his is all internal hate, love Sam <3) scrawny, boy, who was nothing close to the pretty girl that Malia was. She was full chested, had a thin waist, she was everything Sam wasn't. And that made Sam despise her. He just wanted to be her.
Feel Colby's arms wrap around him. Be hugged and kissed by the boy he called his best friend. Be loved by him, in a way that Colby would never love him.
But that would never work, Colby could never love the boy. He could never love Sam.
So he lost feelings, and they grew somewhat apart. Still friends, still hung out, but no love, just empty feelings between them.
~
It had been four months since Malia and Colby had gotten together. And Malia had been acting more and more distant. Making excuses not to go somewhere with Colby, hanging out with other 'friends', constant lies. Colby was concerned.
Maybe she was losing feelings, or was facing some metal issues. What if she need help.
He genuinely loved that girl, he would face the world for her. Jump in ground of a train for her. (Do whatever it takes for her-) Fight anything for her.
But that changed, when he found himself walking into her apartment with the spare key, hearing moans from her room. He didn't even need to look, to know she was cheating on him. The mixed noises of a man and her voice echoed throughout the apartment.
It all made Colby feel sick. He had to get out.
So here he was, sat in his car, sobbing to Sam about how Malia had cheated, how broken he was. And there Sam was, listening to all of that bullshit, telling him that it was going to be okay, that he would get over her.
That day, Colby realized how much he needed Sam, how much he truly loved that sweet blonde boy. But he knew, in his heart, that he had already lost him. That he lost his chance.
After the 'incident', Colby broke up and blocked Malia on all social media, he then ignored her, and eventually she got the message.
~
It had been maybe three months since the break up, and Colby was still deeply fawning over Sam. Sam just thought it was pity, for being so lonely, like a lost little puppy. He didn't realized the love behind those blue eyes.
They had been fighting more and more, not talking as much, ignoring each other. Well all of that was mostly Sam, who just needed a break from everything.
So when Tara and Jake, their two friends, saw how rocky their relationship had become, they concocted a plan. They needed to spend a week on an uninterrupted trip. Cause that was a good idea.
They talked with the two boys' parents and they agreed, so for Colby's birthday Jake and Tara gave them a week in the northern mountains, just to 'chill'.
Colby was ecstatic, Sam was 'meh' about it. But secretly hoped it went well.
The morning of their trip Colby pulled up to Sam's house, to pick him up. Watching the blonde walk out of his home, with his baggage. His blonde hair blowing in the wind, showing off his 'perfect' face. His cold eyes, his red-tinted cheeks from the February chills, his soft features that made him look just perfect.
Colby was in love. And he was willing to admit that.
He felt so inclined to pull his friend into a hug and kiss him till his lips went numb. But he couldn't do that, that would be gay.
"Hey dude? You good?" Sam asked, pulling himself into the passenger seat and strapping himself in.
"Yeah. Sorry. You ready to hit the road?" Colby grinned, looking at his blue-eyed counter part, who he was hoping to reconnect with.
And reconnect they did.
When they got to the campsite that night, they set up their gear. Struggled to put up their shared tent, and then ate a few granola bars because they weren't able to spark a fire. It wasn't a very event full night, but it made Sam realized how much he missed his best friend, how much he genuinely was -using away the boy he used to love.
They kept talking all night, like they had never been fighting or anything. They were at peace together.
The next day, was even better, hiking a bit in the mountains, climbing on some rocks to see an incredible view. Though Sam could admit, just looking into his best friend's eyes, was enough of a view to send him to heaven.
Those feelings Sam had felt before, were re-kindling the more time he spent with Colby. Their conversations and hugs. Their laughter and connection. It was perfect.
That evening Sam and Colby finally started a fire, over looking the beautiful trees below them, and the sunset attacking the horizon and shooting out ripples of orange and red along the edge of the world.
It was kind of romantic as they chanted and burnt hotdogs over the fire. The love in Sam's eyes caught Colby's attention, but he couldn't be too sure. If he was wrong, he could lose his best friend, but he so wanted to be right. So he gave himself a day to decide if he thought Sam felt the same.
The next morning they hiked a bit more, deciding to just sit by a stream and skip rocks most of the day. Talking about life and future plans, anything to keep the silence away.
Before they knew it, stars were tossed across the sky, making the darkness almost disappear. Colby still saw that look of admiration and love in Sam's eye. This time he wouldn't pass it up.
"Sam." Colby spoked, laying next to Sam on his sleeping bag.
"Yeah dude?" Sam asked, looking back at Colby with a soft grin.
"Sam, I really like you."
Sam sat there.
"I really really like you. Like like you. And I couldn't help but hope that you felt the same..." He spoke, bracing for any sort of reaction.
"Colby..."
"Can I kiss you?" This shocked Colby, making him near speechless, but he nodded, leaning into Sam.
Their kiss wasn't perfect. It was sloppy and awkward. But it was full of love and curiosity and just happiness that had been hidden for so long.
It was all the two needed. Just a quick mountain trip, a cheating girlfriend, and a little bit of love.
