RACHEL HAD been invited to the cookout with the Forman's, and Gwen's father, Otis, had come to town unexpectedly. Rachel wouldn't be there for long, as she had been invited to the movies with Nikki, her boyfriend Theo, Ozzie, and his boyfriend Isaac. The two of them (Nikki and Ozzie) had convinced Rachel to bring Joey along, so she did. After the movie ended, the six of them made their way towards the diner to relax after the movie's chaos.
"Can we go to the movies again tomorrow?" Theo asked Nikki.
She chuckled, looking over at him with a small smile. "You know we don't have to be at the movies for that to happen."
"Right. Right." Theo blinked. "We should get something on the books."
Joey and Rachel furrowed their brows, looking over at each other. Joey leaned back in his seat, dipping his head towards Rachel's ear.
"Do you know what they're talking about?" Joey asked.
Rachel chuckled, slumping down in his seat. "No idea. They probably did that popcorn bucket thing."
"What thing?"
Rachel laughed, but before explaining the joke or attempting to, she whipped her head to the side to see Betsy standing above Nate, shouting at him in the somewhat packed diner.
"How can I not be good enough for you?" She asked. "You keep a whoopee cushion in your glove compartment for emergencies."
Nate quickly stood. "It's not about you."
"That's worse!" Betsy shouted. "Everything should be about me!"
"You don't get it. I'm still in love with Rachel. Okay?"
Betsy turned as if she knew and saw Rachel sitting next to Joey. The girl slumped further and further down into her seat. It would've been less embarrassing if Betsy and Nate hadn't been looking towards her. These people didn't know Rachel, but they sure as hell did now.
It was awkward, and God, Rachel wished she could teleport away, but the night continued, and it was an uncomfortable walk home for the girl.
The next day, Rachel swung open the door to the Forman's basement. Instead of the embarrassment settling in, she now wanted to know why Nate had done what he had done publicly and why he went out and dated another girl if he was "in love with her." None of it made sense. Yet again, she was a teenage girl going through teenage girl things. This was one of those moments.
