My cheek stung.

There were bruises across my chest and down my arms and on my legs and anywhere else that a person could've been hit, kicked, or slapped.

I'd run out of the house with nothing but the clothes on my back and my phone. I hadn't even had time to put on shoes. At some point, I'd stepped on some glass, but I couldn't stop running once I'd started. Not until I found somewhere safe...somewhere they'd never find me.

My old school was locked, the churches too.

I could hear the stadium booming up ahead from some concert taking place. It would likely be so filled with so many people that I was sure to be able to blend in for a bit. Maybe I'd even be able to hide out in the bathroom overnight and evade the janitorial staff for somewhere safe to sleep.

I just needed time.

I limped up to the box office, hopeful that there'd be at least one seat left.

"The concert has already started..." the woman explained before looking up with a gasp. My face must've been worse than I thought.

"Are there any more tickets for tonight?" I asked anyway, my voice raspier than I'd expected, drier. My lips also felt swollen, and I touched them, surprised they weren't bleeding.

"Honey are you okay?" she asked worriedly. "Do you need me to call the police? Maybe your parents?"

"No!" I nearly shouted, unintentionally startling her. "Don't call anyone. It's okay. I...umm...I just want a ticket." She placed her hand gently over mine in an attempt to soothe me as she nodded understandably. I snatched it away, afraid of being touched by anyone.

She pulled it back with a sad expression and clicked around on her computer while I glanced behind me to see if I'd been followed. My heart was pounding with worry that I'd be discovered and brought back home just to be beaten more. When her eyes met mine again, there were tears in them. "We only have obstructed view seats left, is that okay?"

"I'll take anything," I said and went to pull out my wallet to pay...my wallet that I didn't have. "I can't..." I went to explain, but my voice cracked. With no money, I couldn't get anywhere.

Regardless, the machine began to print the ticket, and she handed it to me. "Take it, honey."

I wasn't in the mood or position to argue. I had nowhere else to go. "Thank you," I offered her a small smile which she returned with a solemn nod. I checked once more for my parents, who luckily hadn't found me, and made my way into the venue.

As expected, it was filled with people already since it had started. I threw up my hood, pretending it was part of the look, and squeezed by everyone in my aisle to get to my seat. A few threw judgmental looks at me for showing up so late or maybe due to my lack of shoes, but that was the least of my concerns.
