Right after Hanako's discharge from the hospital, Hanako asked Remi to drive not to home, but somewhere else.
She asked Remi to drop her off by herself at a place that had a little walking distance from her true destination. There was no reason for Remi to wonder why she was going back there of all places.
The orphanage, where she spent her first few years of her new life.
There was a bunch of kids playing in the courtyard, ages ranging from toddlers to teenagers.
And at the corner, sitting in a lawn chair keeping an eye on the children....
The Head of the orphanage. The one Hanako had to call Mama.
Hanako inmediately recognised her—she didn't change much. But would she recognise Hanako?
As she continued watching the kids, Mama eventually noticed her and walked up to the part of the fence Hanako was looking over.
"May I help you?" Mama had a kind smile. It wasn't like anything she showed Hanako when she was a child, when she was labeled as quirkless.
Hanako snapped out of it, and shook her head.
"No...No I was just looking." She swallowed. " My..My friend said that she used to grow up here, so I decided to take a look while passing by."
"Is that so?" Mama had a curious look on her face. " What's her name? I can remember all the kids who came here in my time."
Hanako hesitated. Her heart skipled a beat.
"Ha..Hanako," she finally said, eyeing Mama carefully.
Mama's eyes were screwing up. " I can't place her. Your friend must be much older than you, yes? I've been here for over twenty five years but I don't remember her at all."
Hanako gave a tight smile. "Yes. Yes she is."
That was that. No closure, no apology for all the bullying, neglect and harship because she couldn't remember her, all thanks to that man.
Hanako's eyes drifted to the kids again. A group of them was playing with their quirks, water spraying and ligts flashing. Not far from them, two other kids—maybe about ten years old— were staring at them with somethig like envy.
"I hope your friend has fond memories of this place," Mama said, bringing Hanako back.
"She does," Hanako lied. She then nodded towards the two kids and asked, "That boy and girl...they're quirkless, aren't they?"
Mama turned to look before confirming,
"Ah yes, but that doesn't matter. I treat them with all the love and care that they deserve because they were born into this world."Hanako tightened her fist. The unfairness of it all, missing the chance to be love because she exist, tore her inside.
Saying a quick goodbye, Hanako walked away, two steps at a time.
