"Hey, Wren!" Luke greeted as he wiped down the surface, the bell ringing to announce the girl's entrance. She smiled at the man, sliding behind the counter slowly. She was tired. "How was New York? Did Robin behave?" Luke inquired, watching the girl carefully. She nodded and turned, failing to mention that it was her that had been caught stoned in the bathroom, not Robin who'd been weirdly well-behaved the whole week.

"Yeah."

"I like your hair short. You look like your mom." Luke commented, grabbing some mugs from the top shelf. It was early morning, the diner wasn't even open.

"Thanks."

"You okay, Wren?" He asked. "Anything happen in New York?"

"No." She said and turned to look at him, plastering a smile on her face to hide her foul mood. "I'm good. Are you good?" She asked.

"I'm good. When'd you pierce your nose?"

"My cousin did it Saturday." Wren shrugged, grabbing an apron from the rack. She raised a painted nail to her nose, the tiny gem making her frown. "I like it."

"No, it's nice. How'd your mom take it?" Luke asked, chuckling slightly.

"She hasn't noticed actually."

"Are you sure nothing happened in New York?" Luke asked, narrowed eyes. The girl was acting weirdly.

"Sure."

"If you haven't eaten, there's waffles upstairs, but Wren-" She had already scurried upstairs before he had the chance to warn her about Jess. The girl stomped upstairs, hurriedly drying her eyes as they threatened to spill tears down her cheeks as she pushed open the door.

"Hey! Woah! Who the fuck are you?"

"What?" Wren stared. The boy in front of her was pulling a Metallica t-shirt over his head, a lit cigarette in his lips as he stared at her harshly. "Who are you?"

"I asked first."

"Wren." She gave in cautiously. He frowned, righting his shirt and exhaling a plume of smoke.

"Like the bird?"

"No, the colour."

"What?"

"Sarcasm. Yes, the bird. Who are you?"

"Jess. I'm Luke's nephew. I moved yesterday." He introduced himself, gazing at the girl in front of him.

"I'm Luke's goddaughter. And I work here. He said there'd be waffles. Didn't say anything about you though." Wren sniffed and walked over to the kitchen, mentally freaking out.
