"I want to talk to you about something." Jess said, looking around as he clutched the phone to his ear, crossing the road.
"Yeah? What?"
"Wren."
"You phoned me at ten 'o'clock at night to talk about Wren Waller?"
"Yes."
"I don't know what you want me to say."
"What happened when you were younger?"
"Jess, it's really not my place to tell you. And what does it matter to you anyway?"
"It doesn't. Just curious. Bye." He breathed, shutting the phone and the door to Luke's on one swift, angry movement, bounding upstairs to the apartment.
"Well, hi." Luke scoffed as his nephew stormed in, "What's up with you?"
"Nothing."

Wren wasn't avoiding Jess. She was fairly certain he wasn't avoiding her. But she had not seen him since he asked about Rory and she snapped at him, telling him to talk to Rory instead. Robin was in Hartford now, and she had been sleeping on the sofa with the dogs in his absence, the empty house scary to her. He should be back in a few days anyway, she reasoned and sleeping on the sofa wouldn't hurt.
But it was dark now though, and she couldn't bring herself to go back to the empty house, instead staying by the bridge, sat right at the water's edge on the bank, the dogs sniffing around in the trees. She had Jess's copy of To Kill A Mockingbird by her side, since he left in on her kitchen floor but she hadn't opened it, some deep part of her wishing he would turn up like he had the tendency to do. Wren sighed, kicking the water again and cursing herself again and again. She was cold and hungry and tired but she physically could not move from the muddy spot by the water's edge.
"What the fuck, Wren?" Jess spat, catching sight of the girl, falling asleep by the lake and storming over to her. The dogs barked when they saw him, bounding over to him but he ignored them as usual, jumping down from the bridge, nearly slipping as he stood over her. "What the fuck? It's dark."
"I'm not blind."
"Don't even- Wren, why are you here?" He exhaled, pulling her up by her elbow. She shrugged. "Are you drunk?"
"No."
"High?"
"No."
"What then?"
"Sad."
"Fuck. You can't do this. Why don't you have a phone? I've been looking for you for like two hours!" Jess looked stressed and angry like she had never seen him before.
"Okay, mom. I'll go home."
"Is this about Rory?"
"Fuck no. Robin isn't home. I don't like silence." She shrugged, lying through her teeth. "Here's your book." She handed it to him, walking past him slowly, whistling the dogs.
"Why isn't Robin home?"
"Staying with some friends in Hartford for a couple days. I just needed some air." She shrugged again as he walked up to her again, looking over his book. "Why you looking for me anyway?"
"I don't even know." He cursed under his breath, running his hand through his hair. "Are you sure this isn't about Rory?"
"Not everything is about Rory."
"Why won't you tell me shit?" he asked, pulling her to a stop.
"I don't want to."
"Why?"
"I don't want to talk about it right now, Jess."
"Why?"
"Shit."
"No, come on. Wren."
"I tell you and then you're like everyone else in this fucking town, okay? Everybody in this town knows everything that has happened in my family since the day I was born. I want you to be different, for some fucking reason, okay?" She didn't yell. Her voice was soft and quiet as usual and he stared at her for a few moments, just watching her eyes, trying to see any emotion shown at all. "Okay?"
"No. I have enough problem being different in the this fucking town." He told her. "If you don't want to tell me anything, why I am fucking reading to you? Why am I allowed in your house? Why did I come for a fucking movie night?"
"I don't know!"
"Why?"
"You fucking kissed me! Not the other way round, okay? I don't know why you're here. It's dark and I could've been home and I can't and nobody ever reads to me and I don't know why you are and it confuses me, and fuck, Jess." She wouldn't shout and it was pissing him off.
"What you didn't want me to kiss you?"
"No, I mean, I did-probably. I hadn't thought about it. Why can't I just not tell you? Why? What does it matter? You'll get bored anyway. I'm crap. I'm sad all the time." She laughed sadly, shrugging.
"I don't care."
"Why?"
"Tell me what happened with you and Rory." He said softly. A choked sob left the girl and he smiled sadly, letting her hug him and holding her close. "Okay." He whispered, letting her cry. "You ready to go?"
"Yeah."
