It was impossible to sleep.

First, it was boiling hot, even though all the windows had been flung open. Then, there was Khushi lying next to him. And then, once she fell asleep, there was demon Khushi.

She flung a leg up over his. Then she wiggled and flung an arm over his chest. He grabbed both arm and leg and pushed them away, but seconds later, her leg was over his again. Then she shoved him and turned, both feet planted on his back, almost pushing him off the bed. Sweating and irritated, he flung her feet away and shoved her with his back until he was away from the edge of the bed, and she was back on her side.

He was falling asleep when she jolted him back with a palm placed on his damp face. He had just removed it when her foot came inching up his leg again and pushed.

"What the hell?" he exclaimed, shoving back again. Since when did she sleep like a demon child?

He couldn't remember when he finally fell asleep, or if he had slept at all. When he opened his eyes, it was bright and hot. His body was slick with sweat. A hot palm was pressed to his chest; her two legs rode over his. He gritted his teeth and snapped his head to the side to wake her up.

Khushi was not sweating like him. She looked angelic, her face calm in sleep. She had a small smile on her lips, the rolled-up sheet he had placed between them nowhere to be seen. Her delicate arm stretched out between them, palm down over his heart.

He gazed at her, a wave of longing surging through him. He reached out and gently, without touching her skin, tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear. Her smile widened slightly, and she sighed and opened her eyes. They were a warm honey-brown in the morning light. For a few blissful seconds, she looked at him peacefully, and he stared back into her eyes, mesmerized.

Then she awoke fully, jerked her hand away, and sat up. He lay still, uncomfortably aware of the damp sweat covering him. She turned her head to sneak a look at him, her expression changing to suspicion as she saw he was awake.

"You sleep like a demon," he said. "I couldn't sleep at all; you kicked and shoved me all night."

"I can't help how I sleep," she said.

"Really? You don't sleep like that at home." He sat up beside her.

"How do you know?" she snapped, turning to face him. "We have never slept on the same bed together before now."

There was a ringing silence after her words. The awkwardness was so intense, it mingled with the heat and sweat cleaving to him.

Khushi scrambled out of bed and scurried away, leaving him speechless.
