He thought Sheetal took it fairly well when he told her she couldn't be their wedding planner.
"It was so long ago, Arnav. I almost forgot, and I was stupid to not pay attention... I really didn't realize it, or I'd have talked to you first. Or told Khushi. She's lovely, by the way. Congratulations. But I understand if it makes things awkward."
He felt a bit foolish when she said that, but really, he didn't need this right now, not with everything else already going on.
Infuriatingly, Khushi didn't understand this. He had braced himself for a different kind of conversation altogether when he got home from work.
"So Sheetalji was your girlfriend in college?"
"Yes."
"Did you love her?"
"No."
"Why did you break up?"
"We just drifted apart. I didn't have many friends in college. We were both hardworking and ambitious. We became friends, and dated briefly. But we weren't in the same classes at the end. We made other friends, didn't bother to spend time together, and it just fizzled out... Then I came home, she stayed back. We didn't stay in touch."
Khushi looked disapproving.
"It wasn't some Bollywood drama," he said. "But that's what actually happens in real life, Khushi."
"Then why don't you want her to be our wedding planner?"
"What? You still want her to be our wedding planner?"
"She's just started her business, Arnav ji. She just came back from America, after a bad divorce. She's starting out again, and has only done one wedding so far. And she did a great job, I saw pictures..."
"Khushi, I don't understand what you're saying. You want Sheetal to be our wedding planner, even though I just told you I dated her in college?"
"She already worked on some ideas... and you won't have to see her so much, I'll be the one talking to her. So you don't have to worry about rekindling old memories..."
"What the fu – no! That's not what I am worried about. I don't want you to hang out with someone I used to date."
"But it seems like it was such a meaningless relationship. She told me it meant nothing to either of you..."
"You talked to her, after I told you she's my ex-girlfriend?"
"Arnav ji, she had already started working on some ideas, it's not fair for her. And she was your ex-girlfriend. She's not anymore."
"She is, Khushi. The word ex-girlfriend already means that we are no longer dating. That's why there's a word for people we have dated in the past, so that we can stay away from them."
She huffed.
"Besides, she should have immediately asked me if it was okay, before meeting you and working on ideas like you said. Aman said she hasn't been formally hired yet. I don't believe that she didn't realize it was me. How's that possible?"
"Not everyone's heard of you, Arnav Ji. She just came back from America."
"I don't like it. Isn't that enough of a reason to not have her?"
"But why..."
"I already told you! It makes me uncomfortable."
"That's not a reason."
"Khushi, if you had an ex-boyfriend, I wouldn't want to have anything to do with him –"
"I've never had a boyfriend."
