Dabi found Yami waiting by her bike at the spot he'd told her they'd meet up at last night. While she was still busy looking at her phone with a bored expression, he took the time to take in her outfit. A black full-sleeved compression shirt and grey sweatpants. He could make out the shape of her muscles when she raised a hand to smoothen her hair. It made heat rise to his face.
She caught his eye and smiled, stepping towards him, "Hey."
"Hey," he replied, glad his voice didn't waver.
She turned to look back at the dense trees, "Are you sure this is the right place to be training at? What if the woods catch on fire?"
"Don't worry." He put a hand on her head, shaking it and making her roll her eyes. "We're not training here; we have to walk some more. Leave your bike here. No one's going to find it."
She did as he said, pocketing the keys and following after him. They moved in silence, leaves crunching beneath their shoes. Yami watched him from the back, noticing that she could see the white roots of his hair whenever the sunlight hit his hair.
The further they walked, the more the path declined downwards. Yami almost tripped on a rock and crashed into Toya. He barked a laugh at her, earning a sharp poke to the side. He held her by the arm to keep her steady as they walked. The trees lessened, and the ground got more rocky as they walked down.
"We're here," Toya said, his grip on her arm loosening but never leaving. Yami did not comment on it. She looked around her, humming in approval. No one could find them here, with hills of rock and sand on all sides.
"Okay, now use your quirk," Toya ordered immediately. Yami turned around and made a face at him. "I'm here because I can't use my damn quirk."
"How do you normally use your quirk?" He asked.
"I don't know? I think of using it, and it happens? I can't say the same for this new one. What's it like for you?"
"Same," He replied.
Yami watched him sigh and pace around thoughtfully. He faced her after a few seconds of thinking, "You remember what I told you on the night your fire went out of control?"
She stilled, staring at his face. You told me a lot of things, Toya, she thought. I'm here for ya. You'll be fine. Try, for my sake. You did well. He frowned at her when she did not respond, "I told you that stopping it is like putting a lid over a jar."
"Oh," she blushed. Dabi raised an eyebrow in amusement at her reaction. What was she thinking?
"So now I gotta imagine taking the lid off." She said.
"Exactly."
"Okay," she took a deep breath and looked down at her hands, imagining taking the lid of a jar with fire. Two minutes passed in silence as she tried to activate her quirk, a sheen of sweat running down her temple. She could feel the fire asking to be released, but no matter how much she tried, she couldn't summon a single wisp of dark flame.
