Kate, 40 years old. Kanae, 5 years old.

Near a beach in West Blue lived a blonde girl named Kanae with her mother, Kate, in a village that produced wine. Kate, however, was dedicated to making handicrafts with pieces and objects she found in the sea. Both lived in a small house with a beautiful view of the sea behind and a pier next to it where they received visitors, so Kate's business was successful.

Kanae lived happily the first years of her life, until Kate gradually became ill and her health deteriorated over time. To help her mother, Kanae had to learn at a young age to work with whatever she could in the village, and so she learned to make wine when she was only 6 years old. Despite her poor health, Kate liked to leave the house every day to watch the sunset.

"Kanae," Kate called her. "I have something to tell you," the wind was blowing in front of her. "I wanted you to grow up a little more..." «but I don't know how much time I have left».

"What is it, Mom?" asked Kanae curiously.

"It's about... your father."

"Father...? Do I have a father?" she asked with illusion, she never imagined she had a father.

"Yes, his name is Edward Newgate."

"Newgate..."

"Yes, so your name is Edward Kanae, my dear."

"What is my father like?"

"Your father is a pirate..."

"Pirate?! Mom, pirates are bad."

"Your father is different" she said, handing her a newspaper with news about about Newgate. "He was always kind."

"Dad...?", she asked with tears in her eyes at the sight of that pirate.

"Yes, I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, but you wouldn't understand," she turned his eyes toward the horizon. "I hope to see him again someday".

"Is that why you see the sunset every day?" she asked, also looking at the horizon with a smile.

"Yes, because it was at a time like this that I met your father," she closed her eyes, imagining she was seeing Newgate again.

The sun set in front of them and, after a while, they went to sleep. Every evening, the two of them watched the sunset together, waiting. Kanae's desire to meet her father awoke in her. Whenever there was news about him, she was the first to read it. There was nothing in the world that made her happier than reading about her father. She began to feel proud of him and saw him as the best father in the world.

A few months later, Kate took a turn for the worse and the doctors in the village could do nothing, so they had to move her elsewhere.

"Kanae," Kate called to say goodbye. "Don't forget that I love you very much, okay?" she said as Kanae wouldn't stop crying but listened intently. "If something happens, find your father, he will know who you are, okay?" she handed Kanae some gold bracelets that Kate always wore on her left wrist. "I promise you that I will do everything possible to return to your side."

"Yes...", she agreed, crying. "Come back soon and safe!"

She was moved to a place with better doctors, but to no avail, she died on the way. Devastated, Kanae cried for weeks at Kate's grave, in front of the sea, where she waited all the time for the love of her life.
