At the end of the first half of the Grand Line, Kanae gladly went to visit Rayleigh in the Sabaody Archipelago. She was lucky that he was at the bar of the girl he had fallen in love with.
"Kanae-chan," Shakky greeted her first.
Rayleigh turned around in surprise.
"Kanae?" He got up from the chair and went to hug her. "I can't believe it."
"What a nice reunion, do you want me to leave you two alone?" Shakky asked.
"No need, Shakky-san, I'm glad to see you both well," said Kanae kindly.
The three of them took a seat and talked about many things.
"It's good to know that you are well and you have a normal life, Rayleigh-san, you deserve all of this," Kanae said.
"Thank you, I'm sorry about yours."
"You would have been a good mother," Shakky added.
"Yes... thank you both," she said with her head down and a sad smile. "It's been a little while since we met, but... would you mind fighting me one more time?" she asked to Rayleigh.
"Of course," Rayleigh smiled excitedly.
After competing who could pop the most bubbles in 10 minutes, Kanae won.
"You win, I'll make you the coating for free," said Rayleigh laughing.
"Thank you, Rayleigh-san!" she hugged him.
"I'm surprised you were alone the first half of the Grand Line, Kanae... you're stronger than you look," said Shakky.
"I guess you already knew that, Shakky-san is very good with information, but Shirohige is my father."
"What are you saying? I would never have guessed it," she was surprised.
"Roger said that your father was a pirate, but he never wanted to tell me who, now I understand many things," Rayleigh said.
"He doesn't know," Kanae added.
"Kanae," he sighed. "Shirohige is no longer a young man."
"Neither are you," she scoffed.
"Hey, I won't make you the coating."
"I was joking!" she said laughing.
"Kanae?" he asked worriedly.
"Are you all right?" Shakky was also worried.
"Huh?" she was crying. "His voice... disappeared."
"Whose...?"
"Cancel the coating, I have to go back," she got up quickly.
"Wait, Kanae!" Rayleigh tried to stop her.
Kanae felt the voice of one of her children disappear, it was Sabo, something had happened to him. Rayleigh asked for explanations, Kanae had an advanced Kenbunshoku Haki technique that allowed her to sense the voices of her loved ones, even if they were far away, Rayleigh doubted this at first, but trusted in her power, since she was a child, Kanae has been as special as Shanks.
"You still can't go back, do you know how long it would take you to get there?" Rayleigh insisted.
"Are you suggesting I leave him?" Kanae asked.
"You wouldn't make it in time!"
"Kanae... I'm sorry for the intrusion, but what would change if you go back? You risk your time and your life, I think the best thing to do is to go back and ask for help from your people, so you can go with help," suggested Shakky.
Still, Kanae made the decision to go back, she couldn't afford to lose a son. Unfortunately, the journey was too long, Sabo was no longer in Goa and she didn't want to show up before Luffy and Ace because then her farewell was worthless, so she set out on a long search. For a year, she dedicated her life to finding Sabo, luckily, her ability to gather information rivaled Shakky's, she managed to find the clue that led her to the revolutionaries. At that moment, she decided to go straight to their base, which would take her another half year.
"You are..." the group of revolutionaries were surprised to see a pirate in their base.
"Hanayome Kanae!"
"What are you doing here? How did you get in?"
"Hey! What have you done to them?!" one asked while holding another unconscious revolutionary in his arms.
A young revolutionary did not hesitate to attack Kanae, the revolutionaries felt safe under his protection, but their smiles were erased as soon as Kanae easily immobilized him, despite being of a special race.
"I'm not here to fight, I'm sorry about your companions, don't worry, they're fine, they're just unconscious, I'm looking for a boy named Sabo."
Everyone was surprised to hear that name.
"We don't know anyone with that name," the revolutionaries lied.
"Don't fool me, please... he's my son..."
At that time, the revolutionary Kuma had only recently become the father of a girl, so he empathized with her.
"I'm sorry, then we can't let you see him... I'm sorry," Kuma said in pain.
"Huh?" Kanae was confused by his tone. "He... is he okay?" Her eyes teared up.
Kuma saw the urgency she had to see Sabo, he got up from the ground, Kanae let him as she felt no hostility.
"He has amnesia."
"Kuma! What are you doing? Don't tell her anything," his companions scolded him.
"I'll take responsibility, but a mother has the right to know what's happening to her children, right?"
Kanae felt the compassion Kuma had towards her, so she stopped putting pressure with her Haki to hear the explanation.
"He lost his memory since he woke up, but he made it clear to all of us that he doesn't want to go back home, he doesn't want to know anything about his parents."
"Ah, I'm sorry, maybe I should have introduced myself properly, I'm not his biological mother, I didn't know he still had parents, I met him thinking he was an orphan."
"What?" Kuma empathized even more, he identified with her because he was not a biological father either.
"Still, I want to see him, please, I know he was about to die, I will not leave until I see if he is okay."
"Okay." The leader of the revolutionaries appeared.
"Dragon!" Kuma exclaimed.
"Dragon..." Kanae was surprised.
"Hanayome Kanae, you can see him on the condition that you let him decide his path," Dragon said.
"What an honor to meet the leader of the revolutionary army," she paid her respects, "but I made a promise with him, he doesn't need to know that I came to see him, I just want to see that he is not in danger of death."
"Come with me."
Dragon, along with Kuma, guided Kanae to where Sabo was, he was resting, so he never knew that she went to see him, and also, because of the amnesia, he surely would not recognize her. They revealed to Kanae that they decided to stay with him and take care of him, she trusted that he was in good hands, she wouldn't intervene in his life if he didn't want her to. Just as she abandoned Uta, she had to abandon Sabo, with all the pain in her soul, but trusting that it was for the best.
