Shravan's POV

As I drove back into the house after dropping Lara off, I couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness. It was like something was missing the moment she left my sight. Even though we had only parted minutes ago, I already missed her-the way she teased me while I drove, those playful jabs that drove me crazy in the best possible way. Her presence had become a kind of comfort I hadn't even realized I needed, and it was always hard to let go of it, even temporarily.

Dinner felt different tonight; there was an added warmth in the atmosphere. My parents were surprisingly easygoing, talking about how they found Lara endearing and thoughtful. As we chatted, I felt a quiet contentment, knowing they had welcomed her so wholeheartedly. After Dad finished his dinner and retreated to his room, Mom stayed behind, settling down next to me with that familiar softness in her eyes.

"Shravan, I need to share something with you," she said gently, placing her hand on mine.

I turned to face her, curious. "What is it, Mom?"

She started to recount what had happened when Lara was here earlier, and I listened intently. As she spoke, my heart tightened with each word. Lara had turned to her, sharing a piece of herself I hadn't heard in such depth before. Mom explained how Lara had expressed the emptiness she felt without her own mother, and how difficult it had been for her to even think about something as big as marriage.

As Mom continued, describing Lara's tearful confession, a wave of emotion swept over me, tightening my throat. I could picture Lara sitting there on the couch, trying to put her vulnerability into words. It wasn't just the sadness of losing a mother that hit me; it was the weight of her opening up about something so personal to my family, to my mom. Lara was letting down her guard, embracing something she probably hadn't had in years-a mother's comfort.

"She told me... I could be like a mom to her," my own mom said, her voice becoming tender. "I told her I'd be here for her whenever she needed. And soon, she's going to be a member of this family, Shravan."

Hearing those words, I felt a surge of emotion. A tear slid down my cheek, surprising me. It wasn't something I could control; it just happened. I quickly wiped it away, but my mom saw it. Her expression softened as she looked at me.

"Shravan, I know you've been lucky to have both of us here, but it's not easy for someone like Lara who's grown up without a mother. You have no idea what that's like," she said, her tone filled with gentle reprimand and understanding at the same time. "You need to take care of her. Don't let her miss her mom too much. Make her feel like she belongs here, like she's home."

Her words hit me hard, sinking deep. My emotions swirled-gratitude for my family, overwhelming love for Lara, and a sense of responsibility I hadn't felt before. I thought about what it must've taken for Lara to reveal something so personal, how brave she was to let her guard down and allow herself to be vulnerable. I admired her strength even more in that moment, realizing how deeply she had come to trust us.

I managed a small smile, looking at my mom with moist eyes. "You're right, Mom. I promise, I'll make sure she feels at home. I'll do whatever it takes."

She patted my shoulder and ruffled my hair affectionately. "That's my boy," she said softly. "You better keep your word."

I nodded, a sense of purpose settling in. There was a new layer to my relationship with Lara now. It wasn't just about us being in love-it was about being there for each other, filling the gaps that life had left in our hearts. And as I thought back to Lara's laughter earlier in the car, I knew that no matter what, I wanted to be the person who could bring her comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging.
