Maria sat in the waiting room of the small studio, her heart racing a bit. Today was her second interview as an artist she didnt know what to feel. She could hear the muffled sounds of laughter and music through the walls, and it only made her more anxious. She took a deep breath, reminding herself that she belonged here.
"alright, girl, you got this," she whispered to herself, adjusting her curly hair in the reflection of a nearby window.
After a few minutes, a woman in a blazer stepped out, flashing a warm smile. "Maria? we're ready for you."
"Yeah, I'm coming," Maria replied, smiling as she stood up.
As she walked into the studio, she felt the weight of the cameras and microphones. The host, a friendly-looking guy named James, gestured for her to sit. This wasn't the same as last time this place was way bigger.
"Welcome! It's great to have you here," he said.
"Thanks for having me!" she said.
James leaned in slightly, ready to start. "So, let's dive right in. you've been making waves in the music scene. how has life been for you since moving to London?"
Maria paused, thinking about everything that had changed. "It's been a journey, you know? some days are tough, but I'm learning and growing. I've been working hard on my music and trying to find my voice." maria knew she ate that up she felt smart with her words.
"Sounds amazing! And how are you adjusting to life away from home?" he asked, his tone genuine.
Maria hesitated. Should she mention her friends? They were a big part of her life back in New York, but she didn't want to sound too emotional on camera. "It's different. I miss my friends and family a lot, but I'm finding new connections here."
"Speaking of friends, we've heard you have a tight crew back in Harlem—Sugarhill Ddot and Dd Osama, right? What's it like being away from them?" James asked, his eyes narrowing slightly as if he sensed the meaning of the question.
The mention of their names sent a wave of mixed emotions through her. "uhh, yeah, we were pretty close," Maria said, feeling the weight of the words. "Its hard not talking to them as much. I guess I just... don't know how to keep those connections strong while Im over here."
James nodded, encouraging her to continue. "Do you think your music is influenced by those friendships? What do they mean to you?"
Maria hesitated again. "They mean a lot to me, you know? ddot has always been my hype man, and dd keeps it real with me. But sometimes, it feels weird talking about them when I'm trying to focus on my own path." she felt like what she was saying was all lies, she wanted to say how much they mattered to her, those boys including notti, were everything to her.
"Totally understandable. Its important to carve out your own identity," he said. "But do you think that distance has changed your perspective on those friendships?"
Maria bit her lip, weighing her response. "Yeah, for sure. I've learned that life moves fast, and you gotta cherish those you care about. But at the same time, I don't want to get too caught up in what's happening back home. I need to be present for my career."
"Now, I have to ask—what about Notti? He was a big part of your life back in New York. How has his passing affected your music and your journey?"
The question she was hoping he would never ask. that question hit Maria like a punch to the gut. Her heart sank as memories flooded back. "Notti... he meant everything to me. Losing him was like losing a piece of myself. It still hurts, and I don't think I'll ever fully process it." she says keeping her cool.
James listened intently. "Have you channeled those feelings into your music?"
"Definitely," Maria said, her voice steadying. "A lot of my new songs are about him and what we went through together especially my song 'Outsmarted'. I want to honor his memory through my art. He always believed in me, and I'm trying to make him proud."
"Wow, that's powerful," James said, nodding in respect.
As the interview continued, Maria felt herself relax, but the earlier questions lingered in her mind. She had a lot to figure out, especially when it came to her friendships and the memory of Notti. Maybe she would reach out to ddot and dd later, maybe bring back the group together since shes missed them deeply.
After the interview wrapped up, James thanked her and encouraged her to keep pushing. As Maria stepped out of the studio getting inside her managers car, she felt a mix of relief and hope. She was on her way, carving her own path in the music world, but she also knew she needed to find a way to reconnect with the people who had been there for her from the start.
