Maria was chillin' in her room, watching netlfix while also scrolling through tiktok.

Rel had been hitting her up all day, acting kinda extra. He kept talking about "plans" for tomorrow, dropping hints like it was supposed to mean something big.

She put her phone down to focus on her netflix movie, when her phone buzzed. Gosh how much she hated when messages come when she puts her phone down.

She was confused in what rel meant by 'got something for you' she wanted to know.

She knows when rel says get ready he means like actually get ready.

So she puts on an outfit shes been saving to wear one night so maybe todays the night she would be we wearing it.

She gets a text from him that says come down so she puts her shoes on and closes her door.

she comes out of her building seeing Rel leaning on his car with a smile she couldnt understand.

"damn took you long enough" he joked, opening the door for her. "shut up man"

They drove around for a while, music playing, the city lights flashing by. Rel finally stopped by the river. It was a pretty spot, all quiet and calm. She glanced at him, her stomach flipping, she was still confused on to why he was bringing her out.

"What's all this?" she asked, knowing something was up.

Rel hopped out of the car, popped the trunk, and Maria's eyes went wide. There was a whole picnic setup—blankets, snacks, even drinks. She felt her heart sink a little.

"You did all this... for me?" she asked, already knowing the answer.

Rel smiled, but it wasn't the usual laid-back grin. It was softer, like he was nervous. "yeah. I figured you could use somethin' nice. And, you know... tomorrow's Valentine's Day."

Maria sat down on the blanket, not really sure what to say.

"You really didn't have to do all this," she said softly, trying not to sound ungrateful, but she was indeed really happy.

Rel sat next to her, way too close. "I wanted to, though. you know you mean lots to me"

Her heart sped up. She looked at him finally understanding the tension, "Rel... you know we're just friends, right?"

He blinked, the smile fading a little. "yeah i know but i thought we could be more than that you get me?"

She liked Rel so much, but not like this. Not the way he clearly wanted her to.

Maria sighed, looking away. "Im sorry Rel but you really mean lots to me too, but i dont see you like that"

For a second, Rel didn't say anything. The silence was heavy, and Maria could feel the awkwardness creeping in. She didn't wanna hurt him, he was someone so important to her.

"You don't feel anything?" he asked quietly, trying to hide the hurt.

Maria shook her head, feeling bad but knowing she had to be real. "I care about you Rel i swear i do, im still so distressed about everythin' going on in my life yk that right? maybe one day I will feel something towards you.

Rel leaned back, nodding slowly, understanding her words "It's all good I get it dont worry"

They sat there in silence, the vibe completely different now. Maria wanted to fix it, make things less weird, but she didn't know how.

"I don't wanna mess up our friendship," she said softly.

Rel gave his usual smile that she adored. "you wont, i told u don' worry"

"but ngl wit u i wanna go sit down and eat that food" maria says walking towards the picnic while rel follows.

they might not feel the same way but one thing they feel the same way about is their friendship they would never let it break. they knew they were so important in each others life, they saved one another. from Rels traumatic past to Marias complicated life. their both trying to figure out their lifes together.
