Shinigamis were known to be Gods of Death, but Ryuk preferred being known as a demon of death. The title of God felt more detached, he enjoyed the idea of being present for the deaths of his victims, and enjoyed medaling.

While Gods had that power, to humans God wasn't someone who actively participated in their lives.

Ryuk certainly enjoyed being known as a demon, a creature of darkness. When he had dropped his book in an attempt to find a prodigy, when Light Yagami picked it up he hadn't expected to meet a human with such dark desires.

The initial goal had seemed kinder than what it ended up becoming, he wanted criminals to pay for their crimes. Ryuk had even understood the boy's point: there were plenty of dark minded humans on earth. What made Ryuk realize there was more to Light's plans however was when even a simple violation of the law, something that would only earn a fine or some community service, was deemed worthy of death by Light.

The book had turned him dark, Ryuk knew very well he had an effect on him but Light took it further. He was darker than Ryuk anticipated him to become by giving him the book.

Light was busy writing names in the book while Ryuk hovered over him. "What do you consider me as?" Ryuk finally asked the silence boring him.

"What?"

"Do you think of me as a demon, as a god, as something else?"

"A pest mostly." Light retorted.

"Oh? Little apple, that was not the smartest thing for you to say now was it?" Ryuk chuckled as he grabbed the book from Light's hand. Light reached for the book, his face growing red.

"Give that back."

"It is mine, now what I am to you, honestly?"

"I see you as a pesky demon, you bug me and eat my apples and you are a bringer of death. No God should be so careless with life."

Ryuk laughed, well that was an interesting response for someone who was killingwithout question. "Do you know how I see you, little apple?" Ryuk asked as he floated above him, holding the book away from him.

"No.. I don't fully care..."

"Oh but why not? I know what you wish to be, you want to be a god."

"I- yeah.."

"Do you know what you are though?"

"What?" Light asked, his eyes following Ryuk as he floated back and forth. "How do you see me, demon?"

Ryuk chuckled again. "I see you as a little demon of your own, you cause havoc in the lives of others."

"I do not, I am bringing those to justice that deserve it."

"Do they all deserve it?" Ryuk asked with a laugh. "Do they, little apple?"

"They're criminals." He snarled. "Of course they do."

"Are you not a criminal, do you not deserve to be punished for what you do to your fellow man?"

"Why do you care?" Light questioned. "Don't you like watching people suffer?"

"I do, but it is my nature, your nature should be to care about your fellow man, not to want it destroyed. Even if they are inhuman to you."

"Exactly, criminals are inhuman. They are worse than maggots and flies. They do not deserve to walk amongst regular people."

"You are a little demon, aren't you, little apple?"

"I am not little." Light bitched.

"I would beg to differ, compared to me, you are little."
