The room was quiet except for the gentle rise and fall of Lucy's breathing next to him. Tim shifted slightly, his arm resting over her waist as she nestled closer to him in her sleep. For the first time in a long time, he felt some sense of peace, the warmth of her body next to his grounding him.
Then, the phone buzzed on the nightstand.
His body tensed. For a split second, the past came rushing back—the night he got that call about Ray, the night he made the worst decision of his life. He felt Lucy stir beside him, and it only intensified the déjà vu coursing through him.
Tim glanced at his phone. A work call. His breath hitched, and for a moment, his mind went to that dark place again. But this wasn't then. This was now.
Lucy blinked awake, her voice soft and sleepy. "Tim? What's going on?"
He exhaled and kissed her forehead, his heart calming at the sight of her. "It's nothing... just work."
She sat up slightly, studying his face. "It feels like last time," she murmured, and Tim could hear the vulnerability in her voice. "When you left."
"I know," he admitted, his voice thick with regret. He brushed a hand through his hair and turned to face her, feeling the weight of that memory between them. "But it's not like last time. I'm not going anywhere... not for good."
Lucy's eyes searched his, the tension lingering in the space between them. "Tim, I need to hear you say it."
"I'm not going to make that mistake again," he said firmly, cupping her cheek with his hand. "I promise you, Luce. I'm coming back."
She held his gaze for a moment longer, her lips parting as she processed his words. Tim could see the mixture of relief and hesitation in her eyes, but when she nodded, he felt the weight lift just a little.
"I believe you," she whispered.
He leaned in and kissed her softly, the familiar warmth of her lips grounding him, reminding him that this was real, and that he had a second chance. As their lips parted, he rested his forehead against hers. "I'll be back before you know it," he whispered against her skin.
Lucy sighed, her fingers brushing the back of his neck, holding him close for a moment longer. "Just be safe, okay?"
"Always," he promised, standing up and grabbing his jacket. He stole one last glance at her before heading to the door, watching as she sank back into the covers.
Before leaving, he paused. "I'll be home soon."
And this time, as he walked out the door, he knew he would be.
