I don't really know how you're going to feel about it

Lucy sat on the edge of their bed, her heart racing as she looked at the small white stick in her hand. Pregnant. The 2 lines in bold, stared up at her, both thrilling and terrifying. Tim was still downstairs, probably checking his phone for work updates, completely unaware that their lives were about to change.

She remembered that second date—them joking about grandkids, both of them laughing about it as if it was a distant future. They'd also had that serious but stressful conversation at the station, after losing the cancer patient from make-a-wish. Lucy was stressed, and then opened up about the fear of losing her own kids one day. Those two moments stood out, but other than that, they hadn't really talked about having children. It wasn't that she didn't want kids, but now that it was real, anxiety gnawed at her.

They were married now. Tim had become her rock in so many ways. His love was fierce, protective, and constant, but this—this was different. She didn't know how he would feel.

Tim's footsteps approached, and Lucy quickly stuffed the pregnancy test into the drawer of the nightstand. Her hands trembled as she did so, but she put on her calm face, hoping he wouldn't immediately pick up on her nerves. He was so good at reading her, though. She knew it wouldn't take long before he asked what was wrong.

"Hey," he greeted her, leaning against the doorway with that small smile she loved so much. "Everything okay? You've been a little... distant."

Lucy swallowed, feeling her throat tighten. Putting on a small smile she said, "Yeah... just, you know, a lot on my mind."

Tim gave her a curious look, stepping closer. "You're not going to get away with that vague answer. You've been off all day. What's going on?"

She bit her lip, unsure how to even start. She could just blurt it out—'I'm pregnant'—but that didn't feel right. There was too much swirling inside her. What if he wasn't ready? What if the idea of being a dad brought back old fears and memories he had slowly been sharing with her?

Lucy took a deep breath and stood, facing him. "Tim... I, um... I need to tell you something. And I don't really know how you're going to feel about it."

His brow furrowed, concern instantly etched across his face. "You're scaring me. Whatever it is, just tell me." He said while his eyes darted all around.

Her voice wavered as she spoke. "I'm pregnant."

There. It was out. She watched his reaction closely. For a second, his face was unreadable, the weight of the words sinking in. Then, slowly, his features softened, and something like awe replaced his earlier worry.

"You're pregnant?" he echoed, his voice softer than she expected.

She nodded, tears brimming in her eyes, unsure whether they were from joy or nerves—probably both. "Yeah, I am. I just... we never really talked about it. About this. I didn't know if... if you'd want this right now."

Tim's eyes widened, and he immediately reached for her hands, holding them in his. "Lucy, I..." He paused, searching for the right words, and she could see him processing. "We didn't talk about it because we've been through so much. Our work, the risks we take every day... it's hard to plan for something like this when so much is unpredictable. But..." He lifted her hands to his lips, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. "You're my wife. We've already faced things I never thought I could handle, and we did it together. This... this is part of that. And yeah, it's scary. But I'm not going anywhere."

Her heart clenched at his words. She let out a shaky breath, her fears loosening their grip just a little. "I'm scared, too. I mean, I know we can do this, but the idea of raising a child, keeping them safe..."

Tim nodded, his gaze intense. "I get it. I do. The world we live in... it's not easy. But we'll figure it out. Together." He paused, squeezing her hands gently. "Do you want this, Lucy? Really want this?"

She looked into his eyes, the worry starting to ease as she saw his determination, his love, and his belief in them. "Yeah," she whispered. "I want this. I just... I want us to be ready."

Tim pulled her into his arms, holding her close. "We'll never be completely ready. But we'll make it work. We always do." He pulled back just enough to look at her, his thumb brushing away a tear from her cheek. "You're going to be an amazing mom, Lucy. And I'll be right there with you, every step of the way."

For the first time since she saw that little plus sign, Lucy let herself smile—really smile. "We're having a baby," she said, the words finally feeling real, and with them, a sense of joy and excitement bloomed in her chest.

Tim grinned back, his eyes bright. "Yeah, we are." He leaned in and kissed her, slow and soft, a promise in that kiss that whatever came next, they'd face it together.

As they pulled apart, Tim rested his forehead against hers. "You know what this means, right?"

"What?" she asked, her brow furrowing slightly.

"We're going to have to figure out how to break the news to everyone—your parents, Nyla, Angela, the whole station."

Lucy laughed, the sound bubbling up from her relief. "Oh God, the whole station is going to freak out."

"Especially Angela," Tim added with a chuckle. "But hey, if anyone gives us grief, we'll tell them to babysit."

Lucy's laughter grew louder, and the weight she'd been carrying for days finally lifted. They were doing this. Together. And no matter what, she knew they would be okay.
