“It’s time to cut the cake,” Liz shouted as they returned to the party.
The children dragged the cake on the stroller towards Zoey.
“Wow!” Zoey exclaimed as she admired the beautiful cake in front of her. Myles began to sing the birthday song while clapping his hands. The others joined him as they all sang along with him.
“How old are you now?” Myles asked while singing.
“8 years old” Zoey shouted full of joy.
They all cheered and continued with the song.
They cut the cake gracefully and as it should be, Zoey had the first bite. Zoey puts a piece of cake in Myles’s mouth and kisses him on the cheeks. She does the same to Liz and Kaylee.
“Thank you all so much. I love everything. It’s more than I could ask for.” Zoey said with much appreciation.
“No need to thank us. We love you and you deserve this and more.” Myles replied with a smile.
They brought out the gifts for all the children including Zoey’s. They all loved their presents. Alison and Madison, the twins, were the brightest in the orphanage. They loved reading a lot. So, therefore, you would know, they got all sorts of books with interesting content.
“We love it.” The twins chorused together. Liz, Myles, and Kaylee smiled and hugged them both. The children went to the recreational section to have some fun. The kids enjoyed themselves till the day came to an end. They were all tired including Zoey. They thanked their elders, wished them goodnight, took their bath and went to their dorms.
“Ahh…today was fun and exhausting,” Liz said while helping the others clean the place up.
“Definitely. But it all went well.” Myles said picking a cup from the floor.
The caretakers of the orphanage thanked everyone for their contribution in making the party a success. Liz presented a gift to them. They were all grateful. After some time, they were done cleaning up. They exchanged some hugs and Myles, with Liz took their leave. They drove off to Myles’s house first. Liz freshened up and informed Myles that she was going home.
“Take care and call me when anything happens okay,” Myles said.
“Sure will do.” She replied as she hugged Myles and left.
“Ahh!... I’m so fucking dead this time. I wonder what lectures they’ve prepared for me this time.” Liz thought as she tiredly drove home.
FRENCHEZ MANSION.
Liz tiptoed her way into the house. “Oh thank God! They are asleep.” Liz thought while sneaking into her room.
When she turned on the lights, she was frightened by these words.
“Where the hell have you been? What has gotten into you, Liz?” Mrs Lorna shouted at the top of her lungs.
“Gosh, mum! You scared the crap out of me. Don’t you have manners?” Liz said rudely.
# I dare you to say this to your Ghanaian parents! You will smell pepper.
#Don’t try that in Ghana
“Why Liz? What did I ever do to you to deserve this? Are you even the same Liz I brought up?” Mrs. Lorna spoke bitterly.
“Just…just…just shut up and leave my room. You dare not to pick me up from school and now you dare barge into my room without my permission. How dare you. Leave!” Liz shouted angrily.
#Don’t ever speak to your parents like that
“What!” her mum said surprised.
“Fine. I don’t recognize my daughter anymore but never mind; I’ve found the perfect solution. Tomorrow by 6 am you should be ready. You are going to boarding school and that’s final no ifs or buts.” Her mum said with a stern look.
“Whatever…just leave,” Liz said crossing her arms and turning away from her mum.
“I miss my daughter. All I want is to be with my daughter again. Is that too much for me to ask?” her mum said as she left the room crying.
BAM! Liz shuts the door.
“Goodness, she’s gone,” Liz said pacing up and down.
“Don’t cry…don’t cry…. control yourself, Liz,” Liz said to herself and just like that she began crying.
“Argh! Fuck.” Liz said wiping her tears.
[phone rings]
“Not now!” Liz said as she turned off her phone.
MYLES’S HOUSE
“Why is she not picking up my calls? Something is up. I’ve got to check up on her.” Myles thought as he picked up his keys and set off to Liz’s house.
FRENCHEZ HOUSE
When Myles arrived, he sneaked into the house using a code he got from Liz some years ago.
“YES!” Myles exclaimed as the back opened. The guards were all fast asleep.
# Luck is on his side
Myles walked to Liz’s window.
“Pppshhttt”
“Psht”
No answer
He threw a marble from a nearby garden plant against her window twice. Finally, Liz opened the window.
“What are you doing here? Missing me already?” she asked pretending to be okay.
“Oh, my beloved princess, thy knight in shining armor has come to rescue you. Oh, my queen, don’t be afraid for I will save you.” Myles said as though he was in a Shakespearean drama.
Liz laughed and asked, “Wait, are you acting? I thought you were reading out a dirge.”
“Hey! Not fair. My acting skills are splendid. I know you loved my performance.” Myles said as he picked up a ladder beside the lawn mower, leaned it against the wall, and climbed up to her room. His suspicions were right. Liz was crying because Myles noticed the wet, crumbled tissues on the floor.
“Hey,” Myles spoke softly.
“Yeah…yeah… I know what you are going to say. Don’t worry, I’m fine.” She said picking up the tissues into the bin.
“I have nothing to say at all. All I can do right now is this.” He said hugging her.
“You know me too well, don’t you?” Liz said as tears rolled down her face.
“Shhhh...Don’t cry. Everything will be alright. I'm here for you okay.” Myles said stroking her back.
After Liz calmed herself down, she narrated everything that happened to Myles.
“Damn! That’s bad news. This sucks.”
“But don’t worry. I will try and convince your parents to let you stay.” Myles said reassuringly.
“No. Don’t. I want it this way. It’s for my good. Well… you never know the adventure that awaits me in boarding school. It can’t be that bad.” Liz said thoughtfully.
“I have nothing to say right now but I’m sure you have your reasons for taking this bold decision.”
“Well yeah…sooner or later they would have done so because of you-know-what,” Liz said taking a seat on her bed.
“I do. But I’m going to miss you so much.”
“Why?” Liza asked curiously.
“Because I won’t speak to you very again,” Myles said with a goofy smile.
“Ouch! My heart.” Liz exclaimed hitting her chest.
“What?”
“Your silly smile almost killed me. It’s too sexy.” Liz said laughing.
“Ahh…You this crazy girl. I’m talking about something important here and all you could think of was my smile.” Myles said throwing a pillow at Liz.
“Hey!” Liz called out.
Within a matter of seconds, PILLOW FIGHT!!!
Feathers flying here and there, pillows swaying left and right, Liz and Myles were having the best time of their lives.
They fought playfully and laughed to their heart’s content.
“I’m tired.” Liz sighed as she plopped onto her bed.
“Same here,” Myles said as he lay beside her.
They began to talk about their good and bad times together, how they were going to miss each other and so many interesting things.
#real friendship all lasts.
Before Myles realized it, Liz was asleep.
Myles was sad about Liz’s departure but did not express it because he wanted Liz to be happy and to support her in everything that she planned to do. Myles watched her sleeping and just like that, he also slept.
Liz woke up in the middle of the night to use the washroom only to see her best friend sleeping peacefully.
“I’m going to miss you, Myles. You mean the world to me. Thanks for always having my back.” Liz said as she placed a kiss on his cheeks.
THE NEXT MORNING
Liz woke up to the honking of a car and to a missing Myles.
“Guess he left early,” she said yawning.
“And the fuck is that? It’s probably Dad.” she thought to herself as she got out of her bed. She noticed a glass of water beside her bed with a note on it. It read, “Morning Sunshine. I had to leave early because of my parents. Take care of yourself in your new school and be a good girl. I mean the opposite. I will surely come and visit you at school. #More pranks #More mischief #Break all rules #love you. By the way, I Ieft the water there for you to drink. Please do.”
Liz was grinning ear to ear just by reading the note.
“Love you, Myles,” Liz muttered out.
She took the water and began drinking it. Suddenly, Liz spits the water out.
“Argh! What the fuck! MYLESSSS!” Lis shouted at the fact that the water was very salty and Myles had pranked her.
“You will pay for this,” Liz said as she took a bottle of water to rinse her mouth.
Liz heard a knock at the door. Her mum entered her room.
“What!” Liz spoke rudely.
“We leave in 20 minutes.” Her mum said and left.
“Well, cheers to a new journey and pulling more pranks,” Liz said as she got herself ready, wore a jean jumpsuit with a white tee shirt paired with a white sneaker. She tied her curly blonde hair and let loose two strands in front of her face. Liz was excited about this new adventure but sad that she was leaving her parents in that state.
She packed her clothes, ate breakfast and went to the garage where her parents were waiting for her.
“Geiss! Get in already. You know I hate laziness.” Liz said as she placed her luggage in the car boot.
Her parents were still standing there, idle.
“Get the fuck in already,” Liz said as she closed the boot.
Just when she opened the car door to sit, her dad slammed the door at her face, pulled her to the side and slapped her.
“DAD!” She shouted in surprise.
“Lance, please don’t.” Mrs. Lorna pleaded.
“You finally showed your true colours,” Liz said rubbing her slapped cheek.
“Another word from you again…you will hate me for the rest of your life.” He growled.
“GET IN!” he shouted.
Trying her best not to let her tears show, she sat in the car. They drove silently to Brightfield boarding school.
A prestigious well-known school in Miami Florida. The school was outstanding and had the best of everything. The school was built in the olden days.
#the building had the old 90’s vibe on the outside but on the inside was a whole new level.
It had a modern design with unique antiques decorated on the inside. But it was a school purposely made for children like Liz. Stubborn, mischievous, troublesome, you name it. They had all sorts of students. Rumours have it that they all leave the school with a turned leaf, and truly, it was so.
#But will Liz change?
When they arrived, Liz was blown away by everything, the tall yet unique buildings, the beautiful trees and flowers surrounding the massive school. Everything felt perfect to Liz. They had to go through some security checkpoints before they reached the main campus. The main campus was magnificent. It had everything you would expect such a school to have and more. They were welcomed by the headmistress herself.
“Welcome to Brightfield Boarding School.” Mrs. Cheryl said happily.
“Wow, you are indeed the best school in the whole of Miami. Hands off to you.” Mr. Lance cheered exchanging handshakes with her.
“Oh my, you’re too kind. Once again thanks for the donation you made towards the school. We appreciate it.” She said smiling.
“What angel do we have here?” Mrs. Cheryl asked looking at Liz.
“Your worst yet sweet nightmare. Now can we skip these stupid formalities.” Liz responded mischievously.
“Then we are going to have so much fun my little angel.” Mrs. Cheryl replied smiling at her parents and ignoring Liz’s comment.
