IMRAN

Everyone is busy preparing for my engagement, but I'm not happy at all. I know this feeling will pass, as mom said. But something doesn't feel right. My heart is restless.

It's been a week since I last spoke to Hayat, and I haven't contacted her because I don't want to. I know she might be waiting for my call, but what would we talk about? It's frustrating me.

I can't believe my engagement ceremony is today! And to make matters worse, Areeb still hasn't arrived! I dialled his number, and after a few rings, he picked up. “You're not coming?” I asked, trying to hide my anxiety.

“What on earth are you doing, Areeb?” I demanded.

“Imran, calm down, I'm on my way. Relax,” he assured me.

“Okay, hurry up!” I said, ending the call.

I got ready for the engagement and went downstairs. I greeted everyone and took my seat, where the groom and bride were supposed to sit.

Just then, Areeb Shahezaan, my best friend made a stylish entrance, clad in a crisp kurta pyjama that eerily mirrored mine, though in a different hue. I couldn't deny his dashing appearance, but I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of admitting it.

Areeb effortlessly charmed my mother with his signature warmth. “Hey, beautiful!” he exclaimed, eliciting a blush from her.

“I Missed you, beta,” she said, her eyes shining with affection.

“Aunty, I missed you more,” Areeb replied, exchanging a tender hug.

After exchanging pleasantries with my father, Areeb turned to me, his grin mischievous. “Hey, bro! What's up?”

I shot back with a wry smile, “Look who finally decided to show up, you couldn't have bothered to meet me earlier, but now you're here celebrating my special day? How sweet!!” I taunted him and forcefully smiled at him.

I added, “You can see how WELL I'm doing, right?”

Areeb chuckled knowingly. “I'm a busy person, but I'm here for you now.”

“Relax, yaar, everything will work out. Enjoy your engagement day!” His words were laced with reassurance.

I nodded, Despite my lingering concerns, his efforts to cheer me up brought a measure of comfort.

Mehreen's arrival beside me drew Areeb's attention; his eyes sparkled as he greeted her. “Hey, Mehreen!”

She replied nonchalantly, “Hello.”
