Mumbo's POV
Watching Grian fly straight into the window like an actual bird was both hilarious and worrying at the same time. My heart nearly stopped when I saw him bounce off the glass, and I was too far away to do anything. Thankfully, Cub had been in his shop, close enough to phase through the wall and catch him before he hit the ground. The relief I felt was overwhelming. I don’t think I’ve ever been so grateful for Cub’s quick reflexes.
When we got Grian inside Cub’s shop, Cub wasted no time. He did a quick check over Grian, shining a light in his eyes and making sure there wasn’t anything seriously wrong. I could see him running through all the usual checks, but even then, I was still on edge, worried about what might have happened. Then, just as I was about to ask if Grian was okay, Cub walked off, grabbed something from a shelf, and casually placed it on Grian's chest.
I blinked, trying to process what just happened. Was that... Scar? In his vex form, no less, curled up on Grian’s chest like a cat. It was absurd, and I didn’t know whether to laugh or be concerned. Scar, of all people, being used as a comfort object for Grian? It was almost too fitting and ridiculous at the same time.
Still, as I watched Scar snuggle in, I realized Cub might have been onto something. Grian visibly relaxed, his hand instinctively resting on Scar’s back. Maybe this was exactly what he needed after that crash. Scar let out a soft, contented sigh, his wings twitching slightly before settling back against him. The room filled with gentle snores from Scar, each one surprisingly soothing. It was hard to believe that just minutes ago, Grian had crashed through a window, and now he looked peaceful, as if the chaos never happened.
"So, what exactly happened, Mumbo?" Cub asked, looking at me with a raised brow. His tone was casual, but I could tell he was curious about how Grian ended up needing to be caught in midair.
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. “Well, we were looking for Scar,” I began, glancing down at the little vex curled up on Grian's chest. “Grian wanted to meet him, and we ran into Doc along the way. Doc was... well, angry as usual, but he was also looking for Scar, so we all teamed up to search for him. Me and Grian took to the skies to get a better view."
I paused, the memory of Grian flying headfirst into the glass making me chuckle despite the earlier panic. “Thing is, I guess Grian didn’t see the window. He just flew right into it like an actual bird. I was too far away to catch him, but thank goodness you were here, Cub.”
Cub chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Of course, he couldn't see the glass. You know, vexes and bird hybrids—windows are their worst enemies." He smiled knowingly, watching as Grian shifted a little, still keeping his hand on Scar’s back.
I couldn't help but laugh a bit myself now that I knew Grian was okay. “It’s funny, now that the danger’s over. He’s probably going to be embarrassed when he wakes up.”
Cub smirked. “Maybe. But hey, we’ve all had our moments. At least you found Scar. Just... not exactly how you planned, huh?” He glanced down at Scar, who was still snoring softly, completely unaware of the conversation going on above him.
I nodded. “Yeah, not exactly. But it all worked out in the end, I guess.”
To my surprise, we actually ended up taking Scar with us. When Grian woke up, he found himself holding the green shulker box that had been converted into a bed, with Scar still sleeping inside. We decided to head back to my place since it was the only place Grian knew well, and it seemed like the safest option. As we walked, the quiet sound of footsteps filled the air, with Grian occasionally glancing down at the box.
Just as we were starting to settle into the rhythm of the walk, we heard movement from inside the shulker box. Scar was stirring. The lid creaked open slightly, but before we could say anything, it snapped shut again. We froze for a second, wondering what had happened.
