It was the year 3060.
Y/n, an 18-year-old young man, was working on his computer, upgrading some software he planned to use later. He glanced at the time, jumped up, and quickly grabbed his laptop, shoving it into his backpack. Sliding down the railing of the stairs, he made his way toward the front door, but his parents stepped in, blocking his path.
Dad: "And where do you think you're going in such a rush?"
Y/n turned to see his mom and dad standing together. His dad was a top engineer at JCJenson, one of the leading tech companies in the city.
Y/n: "Oh, sorry! Tessa's waiting for me. You know how she gets if I'm late."
Mom: "How's she doing? It feels like ages since we last saw her."
Y/n: "Mom, she was literally here last week for dinner. Remember?"
Mom: "Oh, right. I suppose it hasn't been that long."
Dad: "Still hard to believe you two finally made things official. Took you longer than I thought it would."
Y/n: (smirking) "Well, we just click. Plus, I'm still the only other person she really talks to, besides her parents."
Mom: "Better not keep her waiting, then. Off you go."
Y/n: "Alright, see ya later!"
With that, Y/n dashed out the door. His dad watched him go, shaking his head.
Dad: "There he goes again. That boy's got too much energy."
Mom: "Just like you at his age. And he's following in your footsteps."
Dad: (smiling proudly) "That makes me proud."
Y/n stepped outside into the neighborhood, where several people were with work drones. Cars buzzed overhead, and delivery drones zipped through the air, adding to the city's constant hum. He sprinted towards the maglev station, eager to make up for lost time.
At the station, his wristband vibrated, and a small hologram projected above his wrist, displaying a message from Tessa.
Tessa: "Where are you? You said ten minutes—it's been more than that."
Y/n: (voice-activated reply) "Almost there, Tess. I'll be there in a sec."
He jumped onto the train just as the doors slid shut, and the maglev sped off, gliding effortlessly through the city. As the buildings blurred by, Y/n's thoughts returned to the software upgrade he'd been working on. It was an advanced AI protocol, one that had the potential to revolutionize human-machine interaction. He couldn't wait to show Tessa—she always got excited about his latest tech.
Minutes later, Y/n arrived at the nearby worker drone dump site, the air thick with the scent of rust and oil. The flickering light from holographic billboards overhead cast colorful reflections on the heaps of metal debris. Near the entrance, Tessa stood with her tablet in hand, her dark hair catching the light and glinting in the neon glow. She glanced up as Y/n approached, a playful glare in her eyes.
Tessa: (crossing her arms) "You're late."
Y/n: (grinning) "By, like, three minutes, babe. You know I prefer to run."
Without hesitation, he leaned in and gave her a quick kiss on the lips before reaching into his bag. His eyes gleamed with anticipation as he rummaged through it.
Y/n: "But I brought you something cool to make up for it."
He pulled out a small, sleek device. Its polished chrome edges gleamed in the dim light, and a line of blue LED lights traced along its surface, blinking rhythmically like a heartbeat.
