As Y/n and his team checked their ammo and ran through their gear, the weight of what was ahead pressed down on him. He took a deep breath, then walked over to Dr. Chambers.
Y/n: "Dr. Chambers, could I... use your phone? I need to call my mom. Just... need to check on her."
Chambers gave him a sympathetic nod, handing over his phone without hesitation.
Dr. Chambers: "Of course, Y/n. Take your time."
Gripping the phone tightly, Y/n dialed his mother's number. As it rang, he could feel his heart pounding—wondering how she was holding up alone, worrying about Tessa, and now dealing with his father's death. He swallowed, bracing himself as the call connected.
M/n: "Hello?"
He froze for a second, a wave of emotions nearly overwhelming him as he heard the familiar voice. Despite her calm tone, he sensed the sadness weighing in her voice. Finally, he took a shaky breath.
Y/n: (softly) "Heeyy... Mom."
There was a pause, then a small gasp on the other end, as if she couldn't believe what she was hearing.
M/n: "Y...Y/n? Is it really you?"
Y/n: "Yeah, Mom. It's me. I'm here."
Her breaths turned shaky, and he could hear the sound of her sobs beginning. She tried to hold them back, but each choked cry seemed to hit him like a punch.
M/n: "My baby boy... Oh, my boy. I thought I'd lost you forever."
Y/n: (swallowing back his own emotions) "I'm so sorry, Mom. For everything that's happened. I wish I could've... I'm so sorry you're going through this alone."
M/n: "It's not your fault, sweetheart. It's not. You've been through so much—"
Y/n: (interrupting, pained) "But it is. I just wanted to make things better. But I'm going to make things right, I promise.."
M/n: "I know, sweetheart. You've always had that strength... Just don't lose yourself, okay?"
They sat in silence, their connection reaching across the distance, both comforted by each other's presence. Y/n finally exhaled, grounding himself with his mother's calm.
Y/n: "Where are you now?"
M/n: "I'm at the hospital, honey. I'm with Tessa."
His eyes widened with a spark of hope.
Y/n: "Tessa? She's okay?"
M/n: "She's resting. She's safe now, but she'll need time to recover. I know she'll be happy to see you when the time's right."
A small smile broke through Y/n's serious expression, a hint of relief softening the weight on his shoulders.
Y/n: "Thanks, Mom. For everything. Tell Tessa I'm... I'm here, and that I'll see her soon."
M/n: "I will, sweetheart. Just... come back to us."
Y/n: "I promise. I love you, Mom."
M/n: (voice soft but strong) "I love you too, Y/n. Be safe."
Y/n handed the phone back to Dr. Chambers, his gaze steeling with renewed determination. Adjusting his gear one last time, he joined Anderson and the team, taking one final, deep breath.
Anderson: (patting Y/n's shoulder) "Ready, kid?"
Y/n: (determined) "Yeah. Let's do this."
Together, they moved to the lower level, where the buzz of preparation filled the garage. More than twenty JCJenson soldiers waited near an armored truck and several military vehicles, each soldier armored and equipped for whatever awaited them. The lead soldier, a grizzled sergeant with a no-nonsense air, strode over to Anderson.
