Five Months Later...
Y/n sat alone in the flickering shadows of an old, abandoned room, recording into a battered device he'd managed to salvage.
Y/n: (speaking into the device) "This is Y/n M/n L/n. It's been three months since the incident at the Elliot mansion... since the singularity consumed everything there. The human population has been nearly cut in half and what remains of us is fighting for survival. We've been waging a relentless battle against The Solver and its Murder Drones, now capable of regenerating even from severe damage. We've learned the hard way that the only way to kill them is to destroy their cores."
He paused, staring at the worn insignia on his armor.
Y/n: "I've upgraded our weaponry and armor over time. We each have a railgun built into our arm armor, though it requires time to recharge. We've managed to help evacuate people off Earth wherever we could, though it never feels like enough. Mom and Tessa were among the lucky ones who left three months ago... I didn't get to say goodbye in person, but at least I got to hear their voices one last time. Oh, and today's my birthday, so... happy 19th birthday to me."
A voice interrupted his quiet moment.
Anderson: "Hey, kid."
Y/n looked up, seeing Anderson at the door, his armor showing signs of battle damage. He nodded, turning off the recorder and getting to his feet, grabbing his equipment and heading over.
They walked into the adjoining room where Revy, Connor, and a couple dozen human soldiers were assembled, most of them scarred and worn from months of fighting. Anderson took his place at the front, his voice steady but somber.
Anderson: "Alright, everyone. Listen up. We just received our orders, and it looks like these will be our final ones."
The room filled with murmurs, anxious soldiers looking to one another for confirmation. Revy broke the silence.
Revy: (skeptical) "Final orders? What does that mean?"
Anderson: (grim) "Dr. Chambers got in touch—these orders come straight from what's left of Command on Copper 9. We're to retrieve a storage device and take it to Copper 9 before..."
Connor: (leaning forward) "Before what?"
Y/n: (gravely) "Before the planet implodes on itself."
A heavy silence settled over the room. Soldiers exchanged worried glances, grappling with the weight of what he'd said.
Soldier #1: "Hold on—are you saying Earth is going to be destroyed?"
Y/n: "Yes. That singularity The Solver created at the Elliot mansion? It's destabilizing. It's only a matter of time before it collapses entirely, taking Earth with it."
Soldier #2: (shaken) "But there are still people here. Innocent people. What happens to them?"
Anderson: (somberly) "Unfortunately, there's not much we can do. We've helped evacuate who we could, but we don't have the resources to save everyone."
Connor: (frustrated) "So why are we risking our lives for this one device? What's so important about it?"
Y/n: (earnest) "It's a storage device containing thousands of brain scans—records of people's memories, knowledge, skills. They're fragments of humanity, and if we lose that, we lose a chance to preserve what's left of our world. Dr. Chambers believes it's a potential way to bring back those lost or even rebuild. It could be our last chance to hold on to who we were."
The room grew quiet as the soldiers processed this, their faces grim but resolved.
Anderson: "Look, I know what we're up against is terrifying. But this is what we trained for. We're humanity's last line of defense, and we're carrying what might be our last hope. If anyone wants to walk away, I understand. But for those who stay... we go in together. We leave no one behind."
