valentine's day

"So, I know you don't really like spending Valentine's Day, but I was thinking that we can do a little nice homemade dinner."

It was Minji talking over the phone, voice slightly crackling over the loud atmosphere she was currently at.

Oh, right.

It was Valentine's Day.

On a Wednesday.

Hanni didn't know how that effortlessly slipped from her mind considering how she was in a work environment with hearts and love letters pasted all around. She and Minji never really celebrated Valentine's Day like it was a holiday for them to top one another with flowers or chocolates. They treated it like any other day—they would probably go out on a nice date, but most of the time it was them lazing around, watching a movie or lying in bed together.

It was the idea of someone in a relationship giving their all once a year that set Hanni off to mumble displeasures about Valentine's Day. Hanni believed that it should be practically every day when it came to showering the other with their utmost devotion. Minji agreed with that notion, considering how she would randomly show up at Hanni's doorstep with a bouquet of her favorite white lilies or the unhealthy snacks she would have cravings for (and this was when she wasn't really telling Minji anything about it either) at the most unexpected times of the year. The gestures made her chest warm every time.

Hanni just got back home and was about to get on with her chores, laundry first, when Minji called her. It sounded like the latter recently got off of work as well.

"Isn't that what we do anyway?" she asked, phone tucked in between her ear and shoulder as she used her free hand to transport clothes.

"I mean, we usually just order take out and watch a movie."

Hanni lightly laughed at that despite how horribly true it was. Sometimes they were both too lazy to whip up a gourmet dinner. "That's true. What are you thinking—fancy steak and mashed potatoes or something?"

She could hear Minji relieve a pleasant sigh on the other line. "Man, that sounds so good! I should've gotten that instead. Well, I've actually gotten some stuff to make pasta for tonight."

Hands halted. "What kind of pasta?"

"Some kind of shrimp pasta or somethin'. I don't know, we can get a lil creative with it tonight."

"Mhm, okay. Should I start heading over now?"

"Yes! Come on right over. We can be domestic together," Minji said, laughing.

Hanni rolled her eyes at how effortlessly amused Minji can get, but she still loved it anyway. She bid her girlfriend farewell with smooches against the phone and loaded the rest of her clothes into the washing machine before getting ready to leave.

Minji's place wasn't that far from hers. It was about a ten-minute drive, maybe even less on nights where the lights were all green and there were barely any cars around. She pulled up into the usual guest parking spot (she would always park at in the apartment complex whenever she spent the night at Minji's) and strolled right in with a spare key.

The second she walked in, the smell of garlic penetrated her nose, reminding her of the heavenly aroma of her mother's cooking. Since the kitchen was directly in the range of sight from the front door, Hanni was able to observe Minji use her cooking skills to the test on the pan.

Minji turned over her shoulder at the sound of her front door closing shut. "Hi, babe."

Hanni couldn't help but smile and skip her way through the living room to the kitchen, positioning herself right behind her girlfriend to get a view of the garlic turning golden.
