The night air is thick, sticky with the humidity of summer, clinging to your skin as you stalk the streets of Yokohama. Shadows stretch long across the ground, hiding you within the fabric of the city's dark corners.
So you can follow him.
Your assignment- track Chuuya Nakahara- was meant to be routine. Your job at the ADA demands your focus and caution. But lately, that focus has shifted. It's not about the job anymore.
It's about him.
Your breath catches in your throat as you stray closer to the shoreline, where a soft breeze sweeps across your hot skin. The moonlight reflects off the water in shimmering waves, and there, standing by the dock, you spot him- Chuuya. He's talking to someone, a young woman, her voice trembling as she clutches the front of his coat.
"But Chuuya," the woman says, her voice breaking with emotion. "When you go... I don't think I'll ever see you again!"
You freeze in place, hidden in the shadows, your heart hammering in your chest. You know you shouldn't be here, listening, but you can't help it. The way her eyes cling to him, the desperation in her voice- it ignites something in you. You should be her. You can imagine yourself in her place, as though you were feeling his touch, gaining his attention.
She pulls him closer, her lips finding his in a kiss that's filled with both longing and sadness. "Please, don't leave me," she whispers against his mouth, fingers trembling as they trail down his chest. "I love you so much. I'll be nothing without you."
Your breath catches as you ignore her words. The sight of him you catch, vulnerable under her touch, sends a shockwave through you. His braid flutters lightly in the breeze, the strands catching the moonlight. And when his lips part just slightly, just enough for a breath, you lose yours.
Chuuya tilts his hat back, his sharp eyes locking onto hers, and with a slow, deliberate motion, he lifts her chin, making her meet his gaze.
"You'll wait for me, won't you?" he asks, voice smooth, almost teasing.
A smirk dances on his lips, but there's something else behind his eyes you can't quite put a finger on.
The woman nods eagerly, her cheeks flushed with both excitement and embarrassment. "I'll wait forever."
You scoff quietly to yourself. Pathetic. You know you would never wait. You'd chase after him, from town to town, country to country, until you caught up. You'd never let him slip through your fingers. The feeling burning inside you is too strong, too consuming. It's more than infatuation- it's obsession. You feel as though Cupid's arrow has struck too deep, lodged itself into your soul.
The mission, the job, your responsibility to the Agency- it all dissolves in the wake of this fever. Even your brother, Osamu Dazai, means nothing now. Not if it means leaving everything behind to follow his ex-partner. Your loyalty can no longer be bound by blood. It's bound to the man standing on the dock, kissing one woman while making promises you know he'll never keep.
She kisses him again, more desperate this time, and you bite your lip so hard it draws blood. The coppery taste lingers on your tongue as you watch, every part of you aching with jealousy. You imagine how it would feel to have his lips on yours, his hands pulling you closer.
But you're not alone in your longing. Another woman approaches, and another, and another- each one bidding him goodbye, each one desperate for his attention.
Chuuya's grin only widens, his charm effortlessly radiating as he flirts with each one of them in turn. You feel something snap inside you as you watch his farewell parade, your teeth sinking deeper into your lip, almost enough to break the skin again. He could have all of them... but he should have you.
