The news hit me like a sudden thunderclap, leaving me stunned and speechless. I looked at avyi, he sat rooted in his place. We never expected this to happen. Even today he was laughing and chit chatting with everyone. I got up from my place and dragged avyi with me. He is not in his right state of mind.
He was most pampered and loved by our father. Being the youngest, dad always supported him and gave him whatever he wanted. We sat in the car and drove home. This is the third death in our family in this one year. And it's always the male who dies. No one knows the reason why.
I parked the car in the garage and ran inside the house. My mother sat there, crying and sobbing on the shoulder of Vaiga. She also came hearing the news. My mother saw me and came towards me, "Your dad.... He is no longer with us. What will I do now?". She cried harder hugging me. Sitara came and hugged avi. She burst on me and said,"Dad is no more and here that pandit is telling you are going to die soon. Even though you don't talk to me or care about me that doesn't mean I will be the same for you . I care for. I always did. If-If something happens to y-you what will I do? I will not have no one. I will be alone. All alone." She cried hugging me. I never knew she cared for me this much.
I always ignored her, never talked to her. I always completed my answer in two to three words. I was never interested in talking to her and never gave any importance to our relationship.
We sat there in silence. None of us spoke any words. Vaiga broke the silence and said, "I'm scared, Agastya. What if- ". I didn't let her complete her sentence and said," Don't worry, nothing will happen to me". She looked up with her dark chocolate brown eyes and asked, "Promise?" "Promise"
