Chapter 18

I squeal with delight as we ride through the plains, and a family of rabbits dash past us. A year on, and we were finally back to exploring.

"Oi. Quit it." Levi says, but it didn't sound as if he meant it.

I grin at him, and shut my eyes as Sigyn speeds up. Even the veteran scouts hadn't been this far before. I feel a violent breeze hit my face, and I open my eyes. Is that...

Hange screams with delight, and we get off our horses. Armin makes a beeline for the water, and tastes it.

All of the squad play in the water, and I stand beside Levi, folding my arms, trying to look unbothered and cool like him.

He turns to look at me, and raises his eyebrow.
He nods towards the sea, giving me permission. I look at it, and look back at him.
"You know you want to." He says.

I rip my jacket and cloak off, practically throw them at his face to hold them for me. I roll up my trousers with all the speed of lightning and jump in. I squeal as loud as my lungs will let me, and drink water cupped in my hands, and spit it out.
"Yes! That bitch is salty!"

I turn and look back at Levi, and beckon him to join me with my hand. He shakes his head, but steps a little closer to me. I splash him with the water, and he jumps back, but smiles.

"Little shit." He hisses, and takes a step in the water, and another, stopping before the level is above his boots.

"What are you gonna do about it?" I ask him.

He grabs my shoulders, and sweeps my ankles with his leg wrestling me down to the water and drenching me. I squeal and struggle with all my might, but he doesn't relent.

"Watch your mouth." He says, before walking away.

I get up to my feet, and lie on the grass nearby, letting the sun dry my clothes. Levi sits beside me, and watches over me.

So I don't know what we are, or what we'll ever be. I'm stuck in limbo with you right now, aren't I? A year of push and pull, and I let it drive me crazy. Not anymore, though.

I turn my head toward him, and smile, holding up my middle finger. He doesn't smile, but holds his up to me too.

I don't want to be in limbo with you forever, Levi.

But it's enough for me.
