Ava

I attempted to reach him using the number he called me from. But I received nothing. I want to know why he told me to go on a date with him if he didn't want me.

September 2019

"Hey, Jesse," I greeted.

"Hey, Ava! Did you catch a glimpse of the new guy?"

"No, I haven't. What's up?"

"He's really attractive."

"Come on, Jess!"

"Alright, I'll drop it."

We made our way to our section.

"Hi, I'm Peter. Nice to meet you," he said with a smile.

"Oh, hey Peter! I'm Ava Adam."

"I'm new here and you're the only person I've spoken to so far. You seem like someone who cares."

"Wait, you're the new guy?"

"Yeah, why do you ask?"

"Oh, just a random thought."

He was undeniably attractive. Jesse was right—he had light brown hair and eyes that sparkled like a jungle. His broad shoulders and the freckles sprinkled across his face only added to his charm. He was seriously cute.

As we wrapped up our section, he surprised me with a bold question.

"Would you go on a date with me?"

"What? Seriously?"

"I just mean to get to know each other better."

"We can do that as friends," I replied.

"I understand, but I'm not looking for just friendship. I want to be your boyfriend. So, will you go out with me?"

"I'm not sure."

"Just think about it and let me know tomorrow."

"Alright, I will."

"Bye, Ava."

"Bye, Peter."

As I returned home, my mind was consumed with thoughts of him. I excitedly shared the news with my sister, who was thrilled for me. However, when I told my parents, they reacted with disbelief and anger, raising their voices in protest.

The next day, I approached Peter to apologize for my uncertainty. His response took me completely by surprise.

"We can go on our date without them knowing," he suggested.

"What? How would that work?"

"You're a grown woman, Ava. They can't dictate your choices."

"Sure, I'm an adult, but that doesn't mean I should disregard their wishes after they said no."

"Ava, I really like you."

"I was raised with manners, which means I can't just ignore that."

"Ava, it's time to grow up."

"Don't raise your voice at me!" I shot back.

"Ava, wait!"

"What is it?"

"I'm sorry. Let's just talk here tomorrow."

I stared at him, taken aback.

"It's not a date," I insisted.

As I returned home, my mind replayed the conversation with Peter. He seemed so convinced, and I found myself intrigued. I grabbed my phone, and after some hesitation, I saved his number and reached out to him.
