CHAPTER TEN : UNDERNEATH THE SURFACE
season 1 episode 3

🝮

THE IMPALA WAS FILLED WITH SILENCE, the hums of the engine and the sound of crickets was the current sounds they heard. It was now dark outside and Jamie was leaning against the door, looking out. His mind wandering towards the interaction with Lucas, about the look in his eyes and how he desperately wanted him and Dean's help.

Alice had glanced over to him, noticing that he wasn't even listening to his Walkman. Immediately she knew where his mind lied towards. Her thought was proven further when she looked ahead, seeing that Dean stared into the dark. Even when the traffic light turned green, the vehicle didn't budge one bit.

"Green." Alice spoke up from the backseat towards Dean.

"What?" Dean asked, his eyes not leaving the road. Like Jamie, his mind elsewhere.

"Light's green." Sam spoke up next, repeating Alice's words, looking over at Dean before glancing back behind, seeing Jamie look out the window.

"You okay there, Deandra?" Alice spoke up again, mockingly as she often did, leaning forward. "Nervous to drive or something?"

Strangely, there was no reply or reaction that Dean would do. That's what concerned Alice and Sam a bit further. Without any words, Dean would press the gas, going forward before turning the car to the right. The action made Jamie snap out of his thoughts and gaze, looking ahead to where they were going now.

"Interstate is the other way." Sam spoke with confusion.

"I know." Dean answered back, nodding along, continuing to drive forward with purpose now, heading back to town.

"I get that your head is thick and all, but we were chased out of that town for a reason," Alice spoke, leaning forward once again, her head looking over at Dean, trying to read him. "I mean what are you gonna do? Charm the sheriff back into liking us with that sparkling personality of yours?"

Dean clenched his jaw, but he didn't bite back. Instead, his eyes stayed trained on the road, a silent intensity in his stare that only made Alice push further.

"Didn't think you'd turn around for a ghost," she continued, raising a brow at Sam, who was watching his brother closely. "And here I thought all that bravado was just for show."

Dean would shoot her a look, turning his head to the side briefly to see Alice's small smirk. "We're going back because there's a kid in trouble," he said flatly. "Didn't realize I need your approval to do the right thing."

"Ooh, touchy." Alice had mimicked, clearly undeterred by his tone.

"But Dean, this job—I think it's over," Sam was now the one to speak up, still looking at Dean. To which Alice nodded in agreement with his words.

"I'm not so sure." Dean protested, clearly not changing his mind about it.

"If Bill murdered Peter Sweeney and Peter's spirit got its revenge. Case closed," Sam responded back casually, trying to convince Dean that everything was fine. "The spirit should be at rest."

"But what if we take off and this thing isn't done?" Jamie speaks up from the back, causing Alice and Sam to turn around to glance at him.

Dean only looked through the rearview mirror, meeting Jamie's eyes, giving him a small nod of agreement. "He's right." He would protest. "I mean what if we missed something? What if more people get hurt?"

"But why would you think that?" Sam questioned to Dean, trying to read his expression like Alice was.

"Because Lucas was really scared." Dean replied back, his tone serious while he continued to focus on the road ahead.
